DES News
From the Co-Presidents

Thank you to all the families that came out last weekend to help clean up our parking lot beds.  We had a good number of volunteers including children that shoveled, wheeled, raked and picked up trash in the outdoor classroom bed.  In addition, volunteers spread mulch throughout other beds.  DES has 13 acres of land and we all want our children to go to a school that looks nice both inside and out.  We hope you will be able to join us for our next Grounds Clean up Day.  It takes a lot of hands to complete this large task.

We have a lot of people and businesses to thank for making this year's Registration Day and Open House so successful.  First, a huge thank you to Celena Apple for all her hard work in planning these two big events.  This is Celena's 2nd year planning them and although the work may get a little easier since it's her second time around, she still spends an enormous amount of time making sure everything runs smoothly.

Second, we want to thank all the volunteers that worked a shift or two or three to help on these days.  We couldn't have done it without you and your always smiling faces. Also thanks to Yvette Megathlin and Amber Pride for their work in securing partners in education and sponsors to help support the PTO, its activities and the DES community.

Last, a big thank you to the businesses that showed their support of the DES community by providing coupons, gifts in kind and financial donations for Registration Day.  Below are the list of these establishments.  Please utilize these businesses when you can and thank them for their support.

  • Kroger - grocery bags
  • Nancy's Hallmark, Sports Authority, Shane's - coupons for each family
  • GA Natural Gas True Blue Schools Program - money back to the school for families that use GA Natural Gas
  • I9 Sports - $10 back to the PTO for every DES family that signs up for one of their fall programs

Hope the 1st day of school goes smoothly for you and your child. Please stop in for a cup of coffee after you get your child off to class and meet our new kindergarten and pre-k families.

See you at the school,
Shari Wassell & Amy LeVasseur
PTO Co-presidents
Message to the Grounds Committee

Special thanks to all those that came out over the weekend of August 4th and 5th, including the Scharf, Jay, Nevelos, Reger, Oldam, Vivan, Wassell, and McNeese families.

The majority of the grounds of DES are maintained by volunteers and Tiger Fund dollars with the exception of grass cutting which is maintained by the county. From pulling weeds to spreading mulch, the volunteers make DES look beautiful. Please join us for our monthly grounds cleanup day to continue to make DES a beautiful place. Children are always welcome and have been a big help in keeping DES grounds looking good.

Thanks,

Tommy
Volunteers Still Needed:

We could use a few more people to help make the first week of school run effortlessly.  From helping with arrivals and dismissals to answering phones in the front office and opening ketchup packs in the cafeteria to opening car doors and greeting children, there's something for everyone.  Please email Merrie Bouton (merriebouton@yahoo.com) right away if you are available to help.  Thanks and remember we are challenging all parents to volunteer in the school or at home a minimum of 10 hours per semester.  We are keeping track and will have small recognition prizes for those that meet the minimum.

The School Store Needs You!

We need some volunteers to kick off the school year by working in the school store on Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings from 7-7:45 a.m.  Please email Suzanne Hurwitz (Suzanne@hurwitz.us) if you have one of these mornings available to help out.

Girl Scout Informational Meeting

Parents-

Are you interested in learning more about Girl Scouts for your daughter? Please join us for an informational meeting on Wednesday 8/29 at 6PM in the cafeteria. Girl Scouting is open to all girls in K-5th grades. Troops will be able to be formed only as volunteer leaders become available, so please think about this  great opportunity for you and your daughter! If you have any questions, please contact Amanda Becker at mandybecks@mac.com.

Childcare is not available for this meeting.

Yearbook Cover Art Contest

Attention 5th Graders! How would you like to see your artwork on the cover of this year's yearbook? The Yearbook Committee is excited to announce an art contest just for you. Here are the rules:

  5. Please be sure to write your name and teacher on the back of your design
