Clark's Corner                                        Message From the Principal

Greetings Parents and Community Members

Welcome to Clark's Corner. I hope this message finds you and your family well and enjoying the weekend. The weather has not been so cooperative for Mother's Day weekend, but I hope you are still able to celebrate and spend quality time with your family. This is a short edition this week as many of the topics are mentioned below in the other sections of Tiger Talk.

Highlights from Mr. Clark

  • Instructional Planning Days - We have one more planning day tomorrow for our last set of homeroom teachers. We are hearing very positive feedback from our teachers about what they have been able to accomplish on these days and plans and preparations they are able to make for an even better year next year.
  • School Council - Our teacher representatives for the 2012-2014 term are Mrs. Francine Goodman who is our current EIP math teacher and math coach and Mrs. Tami Slaton who is a 2nd grade teacher and currently serves as our grade level chair person. I am excited to have these two individuals to add to our School Council. I would like to thank Mrs. Renee Taylor for her two years of service and working with us on School Council through our transition. As you may have seen in a previous email blast this weekend, we have a runoff election this Wednesday. Please come and vote when you are here for the second showing of our Spring Musical.
  • General Information - This Tuesday and Wednesday we have our Spring Musical performances - School House Rock, Jr. This Thursday and Friday are our Field Day activities. The primary grades are on Thursday and the upper grades are on Friday. Please check with your homeroom teacher for specific schedules. As is mentioned below, we had a wonderful week this past week celebrating our teachers, and I would like to thank all of the volunteers for their efforts and the treats. The teachers truly enjoyed the events and activities and I did as well.

Have a great week!

I hope you find this information helpful and useful. I hope you all have a wonderful Mother's Day. Please do not hesitate to contact me or the appropriate school personnel if there is anything we can do for you. Take care and have a great week!

DES News
Co-Presidents Report

What a great week it was celebrating our wonderful teachers at DES!  A huge thank you to Emily Ceo, Julie Smith, their Teacher Appreciation Committee and all the room moms who helped to coordinate the great activities for the week.

A big thanks to Jovan Moses and her Grounds committee and all the volunteers who came last Saturday to help make our landscaping and grounds look better.  Many of you may not be aware that the county is only responsible for mowing the big areas of grass. All the flower beds and edging is the responsibility of the local school and the community.

It is also that time of year when we recognize and thank all of the parents who have volunteered for the school.  The faculty and staff at DES are hosting a breakfast to show their appreciation for all the work of our wonderful volunteers.  Please drop by the media center on Wednesday, May 16, from 7:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and allow the staff of DES to say thanks to you for the volunteering you have done in the school!

As the year winds down, the PTO is so proud of the activities and support we have given to DES this year!  As we plan for next year we are still looking for volunteers to help continue with the successful things we have accomplished this year!  Please contact Shari Wassell at [email protected] or Amy Olive-Levasseur at [email protected] if you are interested.

See you at the school!

A World of Thanks to YOU

THANK YOU to the amazing number of volunteers that helped to make Teacher Appreciation Week a successful event.  It was so encouraging and uplifting to have so many willing parents volunteer throughout the week.  We want to extend a special thank you to the following individuals: Lori Womble from Redclay Creative who donated and designed the artwork for the "World of Thanks" theme; Archana Kothapolli for designing the "World of Thanks" banner in the atrium; Ilana Tolk and Kelly Wilburn for leading the coffees; Sharon Callahan for heading the flipbook committee; Katie Frame for heading the restaurant drawings; Robyn Files for running with the teacher gifts;  Julie Cole for her help with the CD; all of the volunteers who made desserts and decorated doors; the group who packaged and distributed the gifts; the volunteers who served the teachers during our Mama Mia' catered luncheon and dessert buffet; all of the other volunteers who assisted dueing the week; and all of the parents who helped their kids with the flipbook thank you notes.  Thank you, also, to Ms. McCoy who helped us determine how to distribute cards so that every teacher would receive a "World of Thanks" flipbook.  We truly want to give each and every one of you a "World of Thanks."

Recycling Event

We will have one final Recycle Event this year on Thursday, May 17. We will be collecting plastic bags (ex:  Kroger and Publix), household batteries and ink cartridges of any style, in the front hall as the students walk into school.

During our last event we collected over 170 pounds of household batteries, hundreds of plastic bags and 17 pounds of printer ink cartridges from participating school families. If you are interested in volunteering, please email [email protected].   Thanks!
