Clark's Corner                                            Message From the Principal

Greetings Parents and Community Members

Welcome back once again to Clark's Corner. I know I had a wonderful spring break and was able to catch up on some rest, reading, and quality time with my family. I hope you were able to enjoy the break as well and energize for the remaining 29 days of school. I do not believe we are that close to the end of the year. Time has really flown by.

Highlights from Mr. Clark

  • Overnight Field Trips - We finished our third and last overnight trip to the UGA and 4-H Center at Rock Eagle just before the holidays. The kids had a great time hiking, participating in classes and team-building sessions, and playing a rousing football game with Mr. Smith and Coach May. Mrs. Sanders even joined in on the second game. The instructional classes enabled children to learn a great amount of information through seeing, hearing, and touching many animals. All three of these trips were fantastic, and the children had a wonderful time.
  • Instructional Highlights - While we were away on the field trips prior to Spring Break, our 2nd and 3rd grade classes had their musical performance, and the Dunwoody Singers performed at the Hawks game. This past week we partnered with Children's Health Care of Atlanta to host our first Health and Wellness Week. Daily activities were provided to the teachers; PE classes highlighted field day and physical activity; and we had a wonderful assembly at the end of the week. We look to continue this tradition and strengthen these activities next year and in the future as well. Yesterday, our children participated in the Science Olympiad at Druid Hills Middle School. I would like to thank Mrs. Baker for sponsoring the teams and Mrs. Beck, Ms. Burdette, Mrs. Mattison, and Ms. Thornton for their help providing this wonderful opportunity for our children. We have our third annual Evening of the Arts this Thursday where children will have their artwork on display, and our music department will perform in the background. This is a wonderful event, and I hope to see you there. This Thursday marks the end of the 13.5 grading period and Progress Reports will go home in TIP on Thursday April 26.
  • General Information - This past Friday, we ended our week with a wonderful parent/teacher/staff tennis event at Georgetown Swim and tennis facility. I personally had a blast playing with everyone and believe everyone else did as well. We are hoping to continue this as a tradition and possibly add more dates to the calendar next year as we evolve and build our culture and traditions. I would like to thank Shari Wassell for putting this together for us. Also, we had a very successful Tiger Cub Round-up last Thursday. We had over 80 children new to DES arrive, complete paperwork, listen to our students sing, and get a chance to see our wonderful Kindergarten classes and teachers. I would like to thank Mrs. Apple, Mrs. Shelton, Mrs. McCoy and the many parent volunteers who worked to make this such a success. Please see information below regarding School Council and the nominations. We are seeking to add three parents to our Council and hope parents will nominate and serve on this important school group.

Have a great week!

I hope you have an outstanding day today. I trust you find this information helpful and useful. Please do not hesitate to contact me or the appropriate school personnel if there is anything we can do for you. Take care and have a great week!

DES Evening of the Arts

Be sure to come by DES on Thursday, April 19 from 5-8 p.m. (specific artwork viewing times were included in the TIP flyer that went home to DES families this past week). Your child's artwork will be on display and you will be able to purchase artwork done by your child.  Light refreshments will be served.

We are in need of 10 volunteers to help make the event successful.  We need 5 volunteers each for two 2-hour shifts: 5-7 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.  Volunteers will help parents through the exhibits, work as cashiers, and help with the food area. Please contact Terri Polk at culturalarts@dunwoodypto.com to select your preferred time slot.

Teacher Appreciation Week is Coming!

Get ready for Teacher Appreciation Week which is coming Monday, May 7 thru Friday, May 11!  This year's theme is "World of Thanks" and we are presenting each teacher and paraprofessional with a "World of Thanks Flip Book" containing thank you notes made by their students. Your child should have received a packet with instructions for making these thank you notes in their TIP packet. Please contact either Sharon Callahan at callahanfamily4@bellsouth.net or Julie Smith at jmsmith97@bellsouth.net if your child did not receive the packet in last Thursday's TIP or if you have any questions.  We want to make this a memorable week for our teaching staff and want to show them how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication!  Please return your child's thank you notes to your homeroom teacher by Friday, April 20 so that the flipbooks can be assembled!
