Clark's Corner                                         Message From the Principal

Greetings Parents and Community Members

Welcome once again to Clark's Corner. We have lots of great activities this week and last week to highlight for the children and community. Also, at the end of this week, we begin our Spring break. Schools will be closed from April 2 through April 6. I will not be sending a Clark's Corner on either Sunday - April 1 or April 8. My next Clark's Corner will be sent out on April 15. I hope you have a wonderful vacation and get to spend a great amount of time with your loved ones.

Highlights from Mr. Clark

  • Overnight Field Trips - We had a fantastic trip to the Georgia Aquarium! We were the only ones at the aquarium, and we were able to see all of the exhibits up close and have quite a unique experience at such a normally busy place. I do not think there are many third grade students in town that can say they have participated in a Flash Mob with their friends and class mates at the Aquarium. I believe the students had a great time with the animals, getting to touch sharks and anemones, getting a behind the scenes tour, and spending the night watching all of the fish. At the end of the sessions, the guys camped out in front of the Great Ocean Voyager exhibit, and the girls camped out in the tunnel under the Voyager exhibit and in front of the Coral Reef. This was an experience I know I will relish for quite some time. I would like to thank the 3rd grade teachers and the parents that were there to supervise and organize this event to make it successful for the children. I am very much looking forward to Monday when the 5th grade students will get to travel to Rock Eagle for our next overnight trip.
  • Instructional Highlights - This past week we had our book fair and spring fling dinner, and I hope everyone was able to have a great time eating dinner and buying a new favorite book. Our fifth grade students were able to participate in a very unique opportunity where we had a visiting poet come to the classes and work with our children during a "Poet in Residence" experience that helped the students learn to write poetry and make the connection to popular music.   Our Kindergarten classes were visited by MARTA Public Safety Officers who helped teach them the importance of being alert to strangers, the concept of "Stranger Danger," and steps they should take if approached by a stranger while in public. This week, our 2nd and 3rd grade music students are excited to perform Tuesday night at their spring concert.

Have a great week!

Have an awesome day today. As I stated above, the end of the week marks the beginning of our Spring Break, and we will not have school April 2-6. I look forward to connecting again with you on April 15. I hope you find this information helpful and useful. Please do not hesitate to contact me or the appropriate school personnel if there is anything we can do for you. Take care and have a great week and a wonderful Spring Break!

Last Call:  Box Tops Contest!

This is the final week to submit Box Tops for our contest that runs until March 30, 2012. The student in each grade with the most will receive a prize!

Simply look for the Box Tops symbol on common food and household products, clip close to dotted line and put in a baggie with your child's name, number of clipped Box Tops, and teacher's name. These baggies of Box Tops should be dropped in the red and black schoolhouse located in the front entry of the school.

Dunwoody Elementary receives 10 cents for every Box Top. So far this year over $900 has been raised for PTO activities which benefit our children. Thank you for your support!

School Council Update

Last month the school council approved revisions to our By-laws. The changes include the following:

  • Change the parent representative election to the spring (usually May) of each school year.
  • Require that biographical information about each candidate be posted for one week prior to the election.
  • Elect officers at the last meeting of the school year for the following year, after the parent election.
  • Add 3 more parents, 1 teacher and 2 business partners to the total number of school council members. This would increase membership from 7 to 13 members.
  • Parent terms (2 years) will be staggered, with 3 parents rolling off one year and 4 the next.

We will start the parent representative election process when we return from spring break. Start thinking about whether you would like to run or if you know someone you would like to nominate.

Nomination forms will come home in the T.I.P. on 4/12. Any questions, please contact one of your school council representatives.
