Highlights of the January, 2010 Deercreek Country Club Owners Association BOARD MEETING

The following is a summary only.

There was discussion about the speed bumps that were recently installed following the paving in the south natural area.  The following comments were offered:

  • The speed bumps installed are made for neighborhood roads like ours, i.e. "low speed roadways" which includes 30 mph roads.
- Every speed bump in this community is handmade and is different. Over time every speed bump in this community will "wear down" to the point that they are no longer effective.

- The speed bumps installed are manufactured to an industry standard and are "new" and at a height that is sold for this purpose. Anything less is a subjective - judgment on how high, how deep, etc.

- If you go over them at a high rate of speed, you will experience issues - That is what they are designed to do! The bumps are designed for 5 - 10 mph and the humps are designed for 10 - 20 mph speeds.

- Lowering the speed bumps would at some point become ineffective as a speed deterrent and would become only a slight road impediment.

- Among 688 homeowners, it will be difficult to reach consensus on this issue.

- The Board thoroughly discussed the speed bumps with respect to whether they should be retained or removed.  Two motions failed before the following motion was approved:
Remove the speed bump and replace with speed hump.
  • Mary Stelbrink was unanimously approved as the Chair of the Common Property Committee.
  • Danny Becton asked all board members to talk to residents about joining committees that are in dire need for volunteers. Common Property and Communications have the greatest need. The Chair, in order to address this issue, created an Ad-Hoc committee of "Committee Membership" with Board volunteers Doug Klippel and George Partin volunteering to lead this effort. A monthly report to the board will be requested.
  • The next meeting of the Board of Directors is scheduled for February 25, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., at Deercreek Country Club.

Deercreek Tennis Team Wins
State Championships

Back row left to right: Buffy Joyce, Becky Downing, Kathy Smith, Cheryl Rowan, Lane Lowry, Robin Braddock. Kneeling: Judy Peace, Adele Givens

A new tennis league was introduced to Jacksonville this past summer. A Senior (we hate that word, but you have to be 50.....and it really is the new 40 right?) 7.5 Tennis team, captained by Cheryl Rowan, was formed at Deercreek. The team played three courts and had one 4.0 player and one 3.5 player on each court. The concept was unique and enjoyed by all players.

Prize Offered:  We want YOU to
be our eyes and ears!

We are betting that our residents know all kinds of things that would interest their neighbors.  To back up that bet, the Communications Committee is holding a contest open to all residents.

Here's how it works:

  • Write one or more articles about a topic of interest for publication in our newsletter. Articles can be about people or events in Deercreek or about a topic of interest (e.g., lawn and garden care, community safety....be creative).
  • Articles don't need to be long-150 to 500 words or a little longer as needed.
  • Submit articles, in Word format, to George Partin at creeksideinv@hotmail.com. Include your name and phone number.
  • Deadline for submissions is April 1.
  • One winner will be chosen. All articles will be considered for publication in the Deercreek Newsletter.
  • The winner will receive DINNER FOR 2 at Friday's Steak Night at the Club (graciously donated by Deercreek Country Club).   You don't need to be a club member to win.
  • The winner will be announced in the May newsletter.

At our Thursday, January 7 dinner meeting we had a speaker from Touchstone Village come to tell us how their organization works to house and educate kids who have no family support system or are aging out of the foster care system. We are still accepting donations for furnishing their apartments - anything donated will be gratefully accepted! So please keep them in mind.  www.touchstonevillage.org
