Life of an Athlete
Many school districts use code of conduct policies to address chemical health and other behaviors that are of concern to the student athlete. Many of these codes do not adequately address the problems that today's student athlete faces. John Underwood, from The American Athletic Institute, will present the Life of an Athlete Program to coaches, athletic directors, school personnel and community members in Oshkosh, WI on November 6, 2009. This program is designed to help school districts confront chemical health issues using effective strategies. What can be done to prevent prescription drug abuse?
Recently a man walked into a Racine County Walgreens and demanded all the Oxycontin that the pharmacy had on hand. The pharmacist handed over 13 bottles of Oxycontin in various strengths to the man. While this type of robbery is not an everyday occurrence, the rise of prescription drug abuse across the country is reason for concern.
What can parents do? Parents can monitor prescription drugs in their home; take note of how many pills are in a bottle and how many refills have been filled of their own medication and the medication of their teens. Read directions for medications with teens and set clear rules about the use of all medications in the home. Make it a point to properly conceal and dispose of old or unused medications. Spotlight: Partners2
Partners2 is a networking organization in the Burlington area. Our mission is to promote positive cultural change in our community and to help our youth make healthy choices. Recently we received an email from a group in Nova Scotia, Canada who would like to start up a program similar to Partners2. Partners2 has already provided information to communities in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Upstate New York, but our call from Nova Scotia was the first sign that we maybe going International! P2 is all for giving our youth a voice in the community and currently we have ten teens sitting on nine committees or boards in the Burlington area. These teens enjoy the opportunity to work with adults, talk with other teens about the issues facing their committee, and have a meaningful role in the community they live.
