DELINQUENT DUES AND FRD COMPLIANCE REPORTING  

As of September 4, 2012 if you have not paid membership dues

and submitted FRD Compliance reports, a late fee of of $25 for delinquent FRD and a separate late fee of $25 for delinquent dues payment has been automatically attached to your account. If you need a replacement dues notice, FRD compliance form, or IOLTA compliance form please click hereYour State Bar number should be placed on all forms submitted. If you previously registered and have not completed payment and submission of FRD & IOLTA compliance forms please submit your information via paper form. The final deadline is November 19th, 2012 before suspension for nonpayment of dues and nonsubmission of the Financial Responsibility Disclusure form.  For any questions concerning delinquent dues and compliance please contact Cheryl Petty at cheryl@wvbar.org

PROFESSIONAL LIMITED LIABILITY COMPANIES

The West Virginia State Bar has been working with the Secretary of State's Office for the past few years attempting to reconcile records of law related PLLCs.  Since the State Bar has computerize many of its records, it has been easier to locate potential discrepancies between the two organization's records.  To insure that your PLLC is properly listed with both organizations, please make sure that you have renewed your organization either through online submission at www.wvbar.org or click here for a PLLC annual renewal form. LAWYER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR    

The West Virginia State Bar is seeking applicants for the position of Executive Director of the newly organized West Virginia
Lawyer 
Assistance Program ("WVLAP").  The ideal applicant will be an experienced attorney with recovery experience.  However, experienced, credentialed professionals with an advanced degree in an appropriate field such as addiction, mental health, or employee assistance will be considered.  Applicants should understand the problems of professionals experiencing impairments such as substance abuse, addiction, gambling, mental/emotional issues, and other potentially debilitating conditions.  Superior communications and organizational skills are required, as is knowledge of evaluation and treatment methods.  PEIA health insurance, state retirement plan and other benefits are included or available.  The Executive Director will report to and be supervised by the WVLAP Board of Directors.  As an employee of the West Virginia State Bar, the WVLAP Executive Director will be precluded from engaging in the private practice of law.   Applications, in the form of a resume, with references, must be received on or before Monday, October 1, 2012 and should be sent to: WVLAP, The West Virginia State Bar, 2000 Deitrick Boulevard, Charleston, West Virginia 25311-1231 or emailed with attention to WVLAP at caseya@wvbar.org.

GREATER KANAWHA VALLEY FOUNDATION

SEPTEMBER 21-22, 2012 - WVCLE INSURANCE LAW SEMINAR

WVCLE, sponsored by The West Virginia State Bar and the WVU College of Law, will present the "Insurance Law" seminar on September 21-22, 2012, live at the WVU College of Law in Morgantown, West Virginia.  Speakers include:  Professor Thomas C. Cady, Ancil G. Ramey, Vincent J. King, John J. Polak, Eric J. Hulett, Cheryl A. Fisher, Paul K. Reese, John R. McGhee, Erika Klie Kolenich, Thomas J. Hurney, and Burke A. SEPTEMBER 23-25 - 63RD ANNUAL MEETING OF THE WEST VIRGINIA TAX INSTITUTE 

The West Virginia Tax Institute, sponsored by The West Virginia Bar Association, The West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accounts, The College of Law, the College of Business and Economics and West Virginia University, will present the 63rd Annual Meeting beginning Sunday evening, September 23, 2012 and continuing through 12:30 pm on Tuesday afternoon, September 25, 2012 at The Waterfront Place Hotel, Morgantown, West Virginia.  Lynn Nichols will kick off the seminar on Sunday evening with the recent Federal Tax Updates.  Monday will include topics on the anticipated 2013 estate tax changes, Capitalization Regs under 263 topic, R&D Credit, FBAR FATCA Reporting Issues, Independent and Ethical Consideration in Tax Practice, What's Happening on Capitol Hill and Employee vs  Independent Contractor issues.  Tuesday's program will be dominated by the West Virginia State Tax Department,  but will also include a topic on the Marcellus Shale, as well as the West Virginia Uniform Trust Code.  This seminar qualifies for 16 hours of CLE and CPE, including 2 hours of ethics.  Further information, including registration information, can be found at www.wvtaxinstitute.com or by calling Ilena Thomas at 304-624-6555. 

SEPTEMBER 25 & 26, 2012 - UNITED STATES NORTHERN DISTRICT COURT CM/ECF SYSTEM TRAINING 
**DUE TO THE HIGH DEMAND FOR THESE CLASSES, TWO ADDITIONAL SESSIONS HAVE BEEN ADDED IN MARTINSBURG 
The United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia requires all attorneys to electronically file all pleadings, using the Court's Case Management Electronic Filing System (referred to as CM/ECF). The Court is offering a two and one half hour (2 1/2) training course for attorneys and/or their support staff on use of the CM/ECF filing system on September 25 & 26 at 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Martinsburg Point of Holding Court. The Session will be held in the Magistrate Judge Courtroom, on the 1st Floor.

 

Attorneys and/or staff may attend one class. Attorneys completing the 2 1/2 hour class will earn 3 CLE credits for office management. There is no charge for the classes. SEPTEMBER 28-29, 2012 - UPDATE ON THE LAW SEMINAR FEATURING BAYLOR UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT KENNETH W. STARR

WVCLE, sponsored by The West Virginia State Bar and the WVU College of Law, will present the "Update on the Law" seminar on September 28-29, 2012, live at the WVU College of Law in Morgantown, West Virginia.  We are honored to have Baylor President Kenneth W. Starr as our keynote faculty.  Judge Starr has served as U.S. Solicitor General of the United States, as United States Circuit Judge for the District of Columbia Circuit, law clerk to Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, and as Independent Counsel for five federal investigations.  Other speakers include:  Professor Thomas C. Cady, Marcia Broughton, Andrew S. Graham, Gerald W. Townsend, Professor Robert M. Bastress, Briana J. Marino, Renee N. Frymyer, Professor Marjorie McDiarmid, and Charles D. The cost is $100 per person. A copy of the agenda and a listing of specific locations for the meetings will be provided at a later date.

NOVEMBER 9, 2012 - VETERANS AND MILITARY AFFAIRS - FREE SEMINAR/WEBINAR
The West Virginia State Bar's Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, in conjunction with the Department of Veterans Affairs and Legal Aid of West Virginia, is sponsoring a free seminar/webinar. The seminar/webinar will be presented/broadcast on November 9 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Three (3) CLE credits will be available.
