Chief Administrative Law Judge, West Virginia Office of Tax Appeals - The West Virginia State Bar will receive resumes immediately for the pending vacancy of the Chief Administrative Law Judge, West Virginia Office of Tax Appeals.  The deadline for submittal of resumes and letters of recommendation is January 5, 2011.  Resumes should be sent to The West Virginia State Bar, Attention:  CALJ WV Office of Tax Appeals, 2006 Kanawha Blvd., East, Charleston, WV 25311.

 

Pursuant to �11-10A-6. The Governor, with advice and consent of the Senate, shall appoint the Chief Administrative Law Judge from a list of three qualified nominees submitted to the Governor by the Board of Governors of the West Virginia State Bar for a four-year term.  An appointment to fill a vacancy in the position shall be for the unexpired term.

 

Applicants must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of this state who is admitted to the practice of law in this state and who has five years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience as an attorney with federal or state tax law expertise or as a judge of a court of record.

Fifth Annual WORKING TOGETHER Conference - A Partnership of Public and Private Tax ProfessionalsWorking Together is a partnership of public and private tax professionals, where practitioner groups join with the IRS and the West Virginia State Tax Department  in sponsoring an annual conference. By continuing to enhance the level of communication and trust among the groups, a constructive working relationship is being built that will reduce the tax burden on the public and practitioners alike, and will further the IRS/State Tax Department goal of improving voluntary compliance.  The Conference will be held on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at the University of Charleston. A continental breakfast and hot buffet lunch will be provided.  To obtain more information regarding the Conference, click hereThe West Virginia Tax Institute is a presumptively-accredited provider for MCLE activities in West Virginia. This course qualifies for 8.0 hours of credit under the West Virginia Rules for Mandatory Continuing Legal Education.

JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT TO THE COURT OF CLAIMS - The West Virginia State Bar is seeking candidates for the position of Judge of the Court of Claims. If interested, provide a resume to the State Bar on or before March 30, 2011.  The Speaker and the President will make the appointment from a list of three candidates recommended by the Board of Governors of the State Bar. A minimum of ten (10) years' experience as a licensed attorney is required. This position involves hearing and deciding claims filed against state agencies and the Crime Victims Fund. The main offices of the Court are at the State Capitol with travel to other parts of the state for hearings.  Some administrative law, mediation, or other judicial experience would be beneficial. LAWYER REFERRAL SERVICE - Sign up now to be part of the State Bar's Lawyer Referral Service (LRS). LRS gives you access to potential clients and also assists with providing a service to citizens in our State who seek legal advice and counseling. Through its companion Service, the Lawyer Information Service,referrals are made to lawyers who are part of LRS. These referrals go to lawyers who practice in specific areas of law and in specific geographic locations they have designated. Clients referred pay a $25 fee for the consultation.  In the event you take the matter, you determine the contractual relationship with your new client.  The State Bar has no involvement except to facilitate the referral.  For a limited time, the State Bar is waiving the $50 annual fee.
