DELINQUENT MEMBERSHIP DUES & FRD SUSPENSIONS - As of today, we have 142 active State Bar members who still either did not pay their annual membership fees by the deadline date of September 1, 2010 and/or did not complete the required Financial Responsibility Disclosure (FRD) form on the back of the membership dues card by the deadline date of September 1, 2010.A $25 late fee automatically attached after September 1, 2010 for late payment of membership dues and a separate $25 late filing fee automatically attached for the late return of the FRD Notice.  If the membership dues payment and/or the applicable late fees are not paid by November 17, 2010, then the State Bar member is automatically suspended from the active practice of law.  If the member has paid the fees and has not completed and submitted the FRD Notice on the back of the dues card by November 17, 2010, then the State Bar member is automatically suspended from the active practice of law.


The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia will hold a press conference in the Supreme Court Chamber on Thursday, November 18, 2010, at 2 p.m., to release The Time is Now, a video explaining the process of child abuse and neglect cases to parents.  The press conference will also mark National Adoption Month, emphasizing the need for children in foster care to find safe, permanent homes.  The Time is Now may be viewed online at www.wvcip.com or http://www.state.wv.us/wvsca/ after November 18.  To request copies of the video, call the Division of Children's Services of the Supreme Court at (304) 558-0145, or email nikki.tennis@courtswv.gov.

PLEASE MAKE A NOTE OF IT - The Office of Disciplinary Counsel is moving to new space - City Center East, Suite 1200-C, 4700 MacCorkle Avenue, S.E., Charleston WV  25304.  THE ODC will be sharing the suite of offices with the Judicial Investigation Commission and the Board of Law Examiners.  The office will be moving on Wednesday and Thursday the 17th and 18th and hopes to be fully operational again on Friday the 19th at the new location.



A MESSAGE FROM CHARLENE A. VAUGHAN, CHAIR OF THE STATE BAR GOVERNMENT LAWYERS COMMITTEE - The State Bar Government Lawyers Committee will have a special meeting at 12 noon on December 14, 2010 at the Office of Judges to discuss strategies for increasing membership to the committee and our presence within the State Bar. 

Bring your own lunch.  The address is One Players' Club Drive, Charleston, WV. (towards airport - 1st right off Greenbrier St. (towards airport), past YMCA, top of hill to the right, then left onto Players Club Drive)).

There will be a future notice of our next regularly scheduled Committee meeting.


LAWYER REFERRAL SERVICE - Sign up now to be part of the State Bar's Lawyer Referral Service (LRS). LRS gives you access to potential clients and also assists with providing a service to our citizens in our State who seek legal advice and counseling. Through its companion Service, the Lawyer Information Service, referrals are made to lawyers who are part of LRS. These referrals are screened and designated to go to lawyers who practice in specific areas of law and in specific geographic locations. Clients referred pay you a one time $25 fee for the consultation and in the event you take the matter, you determine the contractual relationship with your new client.  The State Bar has no involvement except to facilitate the referral from the public to the Lawyer Information Service.  For a limited time, the State Bar is waiving the $50 annual fee. JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT TO THE COURT OF CLAIMS - The West Virginia State Bar is seeking candidates for the position of Judge of the Court of Claims. If interested, provide a resume to the State Bar on or before March 30, 2011.  The Speaker and the President will make the appointment from a list of three candidates recommended by the Board of Governors of the State Bar. A minimum of ten (10) years' experience as a licensed attorney is required. This position involves hearing and deciding claims filed against state agencies and the Crime Victims Fund. The main offices of the Court are at the State Capitol with travel to other parts of the state for hearings.  Some administrative law, mediation, or other judicial experience would be beneficial.
