NICHOLAS, WEBSTER, BRAXTON AND CLAY COUNTIES - Thanks to Judges Johnson, Alsop and Facemire who have offered their courtrooms to State Bar President Tish Chafin and Executive Director Anita Casey for a visit on October 18. CM/ECF CLASSES - October 19, 20 & 21, 2010 - 500 West Pike Street, 3rd Floor, Clarksburg, WV - The Clerk's office will conduct CM/ECF training for attorneys/staff at the Clarksburg point of holding Court, Tuesday, October 19th through Thursday morning October 21st. Attorneys attending a three-hour session will earn three CLE credits for office management. The morning session will begin at 9:00 a.m. The afternoon session will begin at 2:00 p.m. There is no fee for the training.
Due to limited seating, reservations are due by Thursday, October 14.

UPDATE ON THE LAW SEMINAR - WVCLE, jointly sponsored by the WVU College of Law and The West Virginia State Bar, will present its annual "Update on the Law" seminar on October 22 & 23, 2010, at the WVU College of Law in Morgantown, West Virginia. This program will feature state experts: Professor Thomas Cady, Professor Robert Bastress, Professor Charles DiSalvo, Professor Marjorie McDiarmid, Andrew Nason, Charles Dunbar, Robert Stultz, Professor Forest J. Bowman, The Honorable Frederick P. Stamp, Professor Vincent Cardi, and Gale Lea Rubrecht. This seminar will provide invaluable insights into recent developments and issues related to the practice of law in West Virginia. 3rd Judicial Circuit Vacancy: The Judicial Vacancy Advisory Commission is currently receiving applications to fill the judicial vacancy on the 3rd Judicial Circuit. STATE BAR REGIONAL MEETINGS - Ten Regional Meetings are being held at various locations throughout the State. The meetings will begin at 10:30 am, include a lunch, and should end by 1:30 pm. The meetings will provide a total of 3.0 MCLE credit hours in legal ethics, office management, substance abuse and/or elimination of bias. The cost is $100 per person. DELINQUENT MEMBERSHIP DUES & FRD SUSPENSIONS - As of today, we have 274 active State Bar members who still either did not pay their annual membership fees by the deadline date of September 1, 2010 and/or did not complete the required Financial Responsibility Disclosure (FRD) form on the back of the membership dues card by the deadline date of September 1, 2010.A $25 late fee automatically attached after September 1, 2010 for late payment of membership dues and a separate $25 late filing fee automatically attached for the late return of the FRD Notice. If the membership dues payment and/or the applicable late fees are not paid by November 17, 2010, then the State Bar member is automatically suspended from the active practice of law. If the member has paid the fees and has not completed and submitted the FRD Notice on the back of the dues card by November 17, 2010, then the State Bar member is automatically suspended from the active practice of law. |
INTERNSHIP PROGRAM - Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College ("KVCTC"), a public higher education institution located in the Charleston, West Virginia area, offers a two year Associates Degree program in Paralegal Studies. KVCTC is currently looking for law firms and other organizations (both public and private) who are willing to accept interns from KVCTC's Paralegal Studies program for a semester long, 120-hour internship. Interns work for free for the organizations with whom the interns are placed in exchange for three hours of academic credit that the interns receive from KVCTC. If you are interested in receiving free internship help for your law firm or other organization, please contact Craig Giffin, Esq., program director for the KVCTC Paralegal Studies program, at cgiffin@kvctc.edu.
INFORMATION FROM THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE - Attached is a flyer promoting the first Annual Money Smart Week in West Virginia. To view the flyer click here. This year's Money Smart Week event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 19th, at the Charleston Civic Center. Registration starts promptly at 8:00 AM and the plenary begins at 8:40 AM in the North Hall of the Civic Center. The event is FREE and open to the public.

James Forbes, Jr., AARP Board of Directors. Legal sessions include: Overview of Elder Abuse, Financial Abuse an Exploitation, and Recognizing the Signs of Elder Abuse. Licensed Attorneys will receive 4.7 hours of CLEs.
