VETERANS LEGAL SUPPORT PROJECT -The board and staff of Legal Aid of West Virginia are excited to announce a new Veterans Legal Support Project. The one year pilot program funds two attorneys to serve military veterans and their families. National funding for the project comes via Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellowships -- West Virginia is one of only ten states to be awarded one of the new Fellowships. Local match funding of $35,000 came from Governor Manchin's contingency fund. State Bar Veteran's Committee Chair Gene Bailey led the effort to secure additional funding through generous donations from The West Virginia State Bar, the law firms of Jackson Kelly, PLLC; Pullin, Fowler, Flanagan, Brown & Poe, PLLC; The Segal Law Firm; Spilman, Thomas & Battle, PLLC; Steptoe & Johnson, PLLC; and individual donors Andrew Nason, Richard Sinclair and Steven Walker. Patrick Brooks, a 2010 WVU College of Law graduate, and Jordan Ballard, a 2009 Fordham University Law School graduate, will serve as the AmeriCorps attorneys, in Clarksburg and Martinsburg, respectively. Legal Aid's Veterans Legal Support Project will target helping low-income veterans on issues such as veteran's and disability benefits, housing, child support and problems with consumer and medical debt. The attorneys will also collaborate closely with community partners at veterans hospitals and centers and with The West Virginia State Bar's Veterans Committee and the West Virginia University College of Law to secure pro bono representation of veterans and military families. For more information about the project, please contact Elizabeth Wehner at ewehner@lawv.net or 304-343-3013 x 2134.
