MEDIATION TRAINING SESSION - An Advanced Mediation Training Session will be held on August 10, 2010, at the Days Hotel in Flatwoods. This session will offer 6.5 hours credit with 1.2 hours in ethics. ATTORNEY JOB POSTING - The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals is hiring an attorney to perform a dual role: serve as a law clerk to Senior Status Circuit Court Judges across the State, and when not assisting Senior Status Judges, perform legal work in the Supreme Court's Office of Counsel including by working as a workers' compensation writ clerk. MASS LITIGATION PANEL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT -Administrative Assistant position available. This is a challenging position requiring someone with strong initiative and a desire to excel as well as travel to circuit courts in which Mass Litigation is pending for proceedings and trials. Duties include knowledge of applicable court rules and courtroom procedures; coordinating services for courtroom preparedness; providing administrative support to Mass Litigation Panel judge(s) and the Mass Litigation Manager; implementing procedural directives governing electronic filing and service; providing support to circuit clerk offices where electronic filing and service has been implemented; facilitating production of reports and other management techniques in MLP cases; other office and courtroom support duties as assigned. PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE RULES OF PRACTICE AND PROCEDURE FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CIVIL PROCEEDINGS - The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals has placed proposed amendments to the Rules of Practice and Procedure for Domestic Violence Civil Proceedings for public comment. The proposed amendments are largely required as a result of certain legislative amendments. Click here to review the proposed amendments. STATE BAR REGIONAL MEETINGS - The State Bar will begin its annual set of Regional Meetings on October 5, 2010. Ten meetings will be held at various locations throughout the State. The meetings will begin at 10:30 am, include a lunch, and should end by 1:30 pm. The meetings will provide a total of 3.0 MCLE credit hours in legal ethics, office management, substance abuse and/or elimination of bias. The cost is $100 per person. YOUR BOARD OF GOVERNORS AT WORK - - At the Annual Meeting of the West Virginia State Bar held at Snowshoe on July 23 and 24, 2010, the Board of Governors met and received numerous reports relating to the mission of the West Virginia State Bar.
� Received report from WVCLE Chairperson, Stephen L. Thompson, who discussed important initiatives and provided a background of the work of the WVCLE for the new Board of Governor members. Mr. Thompson also reported on the fiscal restraint and financial strength of WVCLE, particularly as compared to surrounding states.
� Received report from American Bar Association delegate Dan Callaghan concerning the upcoming ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco and his attendance at the recent ABA meeting in Atlanta.
� Discussed various options concerning plans for the State Bar Center in light of the State Bar Strategic Plan of improving its facilities and infrastructure.
� Discussed logistics for managing the IOLTA program in light of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals recent order transferring management responsibilities for IOLTA to the Bar.
� Confirmed various appointments to the Lawyer Disciplinary Board.
� Received written report from Mike Romano, President of the West Virginia Association for Justice. In particular, the Association recognized one of its members, Harry Dietzler, (also a current State Bar Board of Governor representing District 8) for his recent election as President of the Public Justice Foundation, a national public interest law firm.
� Received report from Young Lawyers Section Chairperson, Chris Gardill, who reported on YLS Developments for the "Wills For Heroes" program that YLS is organizing. Further discussed social networking and media opportunities as well as the YLS concerns regarding criminal appointment payments to appointed counsel.
� Approved the State Bar budget for the fiscal year 2010-2011. During the budget process, the Board of Governors carefully considered many issues that impact the Bar including increasing costs and expenditures for health care premiums and carefully analyzed ways to trim expenses related to copying and technology.
� Received report from Lawyer Disciplinary Board chairperson David Jividen and Chief Disciplinary Counsel Rachel Fletcher-Cipoletti.
� Approved the State Bar joining the Amicus Brief authored by the New York State Bar concerning "red flags rules" in support of the position that attorneys are not creditors under Section 114 of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003.
