Today Chief Justice Robin Jean Davis announced that the Court will release the Revised Rules of Appellate Procedure for public comment on Monday May 17, 2010. The Court has prepared a page on its website with resources in connection with this announcement. The revised rules will be available on that web page on Monday:  http://www.state.wv.us/wvsca/rules/appellate-revisions.htm 
The public comment period concludes on July 19, 2010.  In order to facilitate comments, the Court has scheduled ten free public seminars to occur over the next three weeks.  Attorneys who attend the ninety-minute seminars are eligible to receive 1.8 CLE credits in office management/ethics. Printed copies of the rules will be distributed at the seminars. The seminars will be:
 
(1) 10:30 a.m. to noon on Monday, May 17, at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Charleston;
(2) 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, at the Ohio County Public Library Auditorium, 52 16th St., in Wheeling;
(3) 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, at the Fayette County Courthouse in Fayetteville;
(4) 10:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, May 20, at the Judge Black Judicial Annex, Fort Boreman Room, in Parkersburg;
(5) 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 21, at the Upshur County Courthouse, in Buckhannon;
(6) 10:30 a.m. to noon Monday, May 24, at the Chief Logan State Park Conference Center in Logan;
(7) 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at the West Virginia University College of Law, Marlyn E. Lugar Courtroom, in Morgantown;
(8) 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26, at the South Branch Inn in Moorefield;
(9) 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, at the Dunn Building, County Commission Hearing Room, in Martinsburg;
(10) 10:30 a.m. to noon, Thursday, June 3, at the Pullman Plaza Hotel in Huntington.

CM/ECF TRAINING CLASSES - The United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia will conduct CM/ECF training classes for attorneys and staff beginning Tuesday, May 18 at the Federal Building, 1125 Chapline Street, Wheeling.
Tuesday, May 18th  classes are full and reservations are being taken for May 19th with classes beginning at 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.  Once these classes fill for the 19th, May 20th will be added.  There is no charge for the training.  Attorneys attending the 2 1/2 hour class will earn 3 CLE credits for office management. The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia's Court Improvement Program has posted video of the 2009 child abuse and neglect cross-training conference on its Web site, www.wvcip.com, under the heading "About Us."  The 2010 Judicial Benchbook for Child Abuse and Neglect Proceedings is also available on the Web site under the heading "Software Download."  The 2010 cross-training conferences will take place June 21-22 at Canaan Valley Resort; June 24-25 at the Martinsburg Holiday Inn; and July 12-13 at the Big Sandy Arena in Huntington.  Registration will be required for the 2010 conferences, with information posted this spring on www.wvcip.com.
WORKSHOP - A "Relatives as Parents" workshop will take place on Saturday, May 22, 2010, at the Clarksburg YWCA, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Speakers will be Joanne Brown, consultant with the ABA Center on Children and the Law, and the Honorable Mike Kelly, Eleventh Family Court Circuit.  The workshop is free and provides 4.2 MCLEs.  Registration is required by May 14.  For more information, please click here.
 
LEGAL AID OF WEST VIRGINIA LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO ASSIST LOW INCOME TAXPAYERS IN WEST VIRGINIA - Legal Aid of West Virginia is now providing assistance to low income West Virginians who have a controversy with the IRS through its Low Income Taxpayer Clinic. The Clinic plans to utilize volunteer attorneys, accountants and enrolled agents in assisting clients, offering advice and brief services, conducting educational outreach and providing direct representation to clients in need.  Volunteers will receive support available to other Legal Aid volunteers including malpractice insurance, reimbursement of litigation expenses, free trainings and support from Legal Aid staff attorneys and Clinic staff.  To learn more about the clinic or to sign up to volunteer, contact Catherine Eckley at ceckley@lawv.net or 304-343-3013, ext. 2167.
