Mendhaden play a critical role in the ecosystem of the Atlantic Coastal Waters. They are a key link in the food chain, feeding on plankton by filtering it from the water. Many valued fish, marine mammals and birds feed on the menhaden. The menhaden population is at the lowest level on record and must be protected.
