Greetings!

What an exciting time to be part of the Hillsdale community. The ceremony to mark the opening of the new Town Hall on October 15 was a lot of fun. Thanks to all of you who came out with your trombones and marching shoes - we now have a fully dedicated Town Hall.

Thanks especially to the people of Hillsdale who voted back in August 2009 to make the historic library a new home for our town. If you haven't been by to see the renovation, please stop in!

Ready for one more celebration? On Saturday at 11 am, October 29, the County Sheriff's Office will open up their new substation - all are welcome.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget to VOTE on November 8!

The Town Board:  Art Baer, Town Supervisor, and Carmen Barbato, Peter Cipkowski, Augie Sena and Jill Sims-Elster.

PS Please note that some e-mail servers cut off the end of the calendar and the newsletter.  So if yours does not end with a little note from us, go to the very end and click on "view entire message.

Parry Teasdale and Tony Jones

Remembering
Elinor Mettler

All history is ultimately a personal story. The history of a community is the weaving together of many personal stories.

On Sunday afternoon, October 16, a group of admirers of Elinor Mettler, one of our favorite local storytellers, gathered at the Roe Jan Historical Society Museum to dedicate a Paperbark Maple tree (Acer griseum) in her honor. Special guests Diane Boice-Yorck, Tony Jones, Parry Teasdale, Donna Peck and Father Brennan shared their recollections and blessings. Elinor Mettler, who died on May 11, 2011, was one of our Society's founders and one of the most remarkable people in our community.

All About White Tail Deer at the Roe Jan Park

Saturday November 5
2:00 pm
Roeliff Jansen Park

White tail deer will be the topic of the season's final Nature Fun Program at Roeliff Jansen Park.

Outdoor educator Fran Martino will start the afternoon off in the Hilltop Barn with a talk full of fascinating information about deer that she will illustrate with deer skulls, jaw bones, antlers, hooves, and pelts. Did you know that white tail deer run at 40 miles and hour, jump nine foot fences and can swim at 13 miles an hour? Fran will teach about racks, runs, beds, scrapes, and things you never knew about these local residents.

After the talk the group will take an hour long walk through the park looking for, rubs, scrapes and other deer sign.

Meet at the Hilltop Barn (also known as Rec Barn). Dress warmly and wear shoes or boots for walking.  Children under 12 must be accompanies by an adult.
