Greetings!
What an exciting time to be part of the Hillsdale community. The ceremony to mark the opening of the new Town Hall on October 15 was a lot of fun. Thanks to all of you who came out with your trombones and marching shoes - we now have a fully dedicated Town Hall.
Thanks especially to the people of Hillsdale who voted back in August 2009 to make the historic library a new home for our town. If you haven't been by to see the renovation, please stop in!
Ready for one more celebration? On Saturday at 11 am, October 29, the County Sheriff's Office will open up their new substation - all are welcome.
IMPORTANT: Don't forget to VOTE on November 8!
The Town Board: Art Baer, Town Supervisor, and Carmen Barbato, Peter Cipkowski, Augie Sena and Jill Sims-Elster.
PS Please note that some e-mail servers cut off the end of the calendar and the newsletter. So if yours does not end with a little note from us, go to the very end and click on "view entire message.

Parry Teasdale and Tony Jones |
Remembering Elinor Mettler
All history is ultimately a personal story. The history of a community is the weaving together of many personal stories.
On Sunday afternoon, October 16, a group of admirers of Elinor Mettler, one of our favorite local storytellers, gathered at the Roe Jan Historical Society Museum to dedicate a Paperbark Maple tree (Acer griseum) in her honor. Special guests Diane Boice-Yorck, Tony Jones, Parry Teasdale, Donna Peck and Father Brennan shared their recollections and blessings. Elinor Mettler, who died on May 11, 2011, was one of our Society's founders and one of the most remarkable people in our community. |

We have been given a wonderful array of non-fiction in good condition. Fiction includes "trade" paperbacks and great bargains on regular paperbacks. Non-fiction is sorted by subject and fiction by the first letter of the author's last name. There will be a table or two of CD's, books on tape and CD, videos and DVDs. All are priced for any budget. The children's table has everything from board books to teen thrillers. Newberry and Caldecott winners have been presorted.
Cookies are a big part of this event. Last year we sold hundreds of pounds of cookies. There will be a great selection again this year and at $6 a pound they are a bargain.
A soup lunch and theme baskets for a donation are also part of the three day event. Contact the library for more information 325-4101 or check the library web site www.roejanlibrary.org. |
