Greetings!

The time has come to mark the Grand Opening of Hillsdale's NEW Town Hall. And that's just the beginning. On Saturday, October 15, let's also celebrate the opening of a NEW satellite station for the Columbia County Sheriff and Hillsdale's brand NEW General Store!

The dedication starts at the old Town Hall at 11:00 am. From there, we'll walk up to the General Store and conclude up the street at the new Town Hall by 12:00 noon. Please join us - and bring the kids - this will be fun (a few surprises are in the works). Click here for details.

The Town Board:  Art Baer, Town Supervisor, and Carmen Barbato, Peter Cipkowski, Augie Sena and Jill Sims-Elster.

PS Please note that some e-mail servers cut off the end of the calendar and the newsletter.  So if yours does not end with a little note from us, go to the very end and click on "view entire message.

Hillsdale's NEW Town Hall

Library

A referendum in August 2009 led to the town's purchase of the historic library building. After a year-long renovation, this landmark opened its doors on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, and began its new life as the seat of town government. By the way, the project was completed reasonably close to budget expectations (a bonus in an unpredictable economy) thanks in part to the leadership of architect Joseph Iuviene and town board member Augie Sena. Further plans are underway to restore the building's impressive exterior and bring some style to the adjacent grounds.

DEDICATION CEREMONY: Please join us for a dedication ceremony on Saturday, October 15th between 11:00 am and 12:00 noon. We'll gather by the old Town Hall and walk up to the new Town Hall.  Click here for details about the dedication ceremony and other events in town on the 15th!

Hillsdale General Store LogoHillsdale General Store to Open October 15th

After more than a year of careful renovation, the Hillsdale General Store will finally open its doors. Formerly Hillsdale Electronics, the building has undergone preservation efforts, which includes a new foundation, two restored porches and historically correct windows all put back in their original locations.

David Ruede and Matthew White, co-owners of the building partnered with local craftsmen to bring this architectural gem back to its circa 1855 charm.

On October 15th, Matthew will be opening a store within the restored interior. The sun-lit space will be filled with house wares, gifts, seasonal items, furnishings, antiques and even an old-fashioned candy counter. Many items have been created specifically for the Hillsdale General Store, which means they are not available anywhere else in the world.

"I wanted to create a shopping experience that offers a broad range of useful and beautiful items at various prices, so anyone can find something they love", said Matthew White. "Hillsdale is a very special place, and I hope my shop will reflect that."

(In the next few months a new restaurant called the CrossRoads Food Shop will open within this building. Great coffee plus breakfast, lunch and dinner is coming soon!)

Learn about the Copake to Hillsdale Rail Trail Project

Saturday Oct. 15
3:30 p.m.

Join us at the new Roeliff Jansen Library (one mile south of the Hillsdale traffic light on Route 22).

Learn details and ask questions about the project from the Harlem Valley Rail Trail Association, state officials, the Columbia Land Conservancy and the local residents who have formed the Copake Hillsdale Rail Trail Alliance.

As it did in Millerton, extending the rail trail from Copake Falls to Hillsdale will attract new businesses and visitors to our communities. We already have won a $121,000 state grant to pay for construction-ready drawings, and are more than halfway toward our goal of raising the required $40,000 in matching funds.
