Greetings!
Let it snow? The recent record snows have been great for winter sports. Driving over Molasses Hill, the unofficial name for for the hill that passes Catamount ski area on Route 23, proves that. Last time we checked: Hillsdale is not in Iceland
But that hasn't stopped the snow from falling on Hillsdale nor our Highway Department from getting the job done. Did you know that Hillsdale has some 76 miles of roads of which 41 miles are unpaved?
Road maintenance is part art and part science. The Hillsdale Highway Department cuts the proportion of salt on our dirt roads in anticipation of spring as this would cause the roads to thaw more quickly, making them muddy and, sometimes, impassable. (Here's hoping for a slow thaw.) In addition, the crew uses a dose of liquid calcium which is more effective at lower temperatures and better for the environment.
That results in 8 plow routes that take 3.5 hours each to clear to get the job done right. We think that means our Highway Department deserves a coffee, a handshake, or both. |
Hillsdale's Sewer Continues to Impress Here's something Hillsdale can be proud of. Hillsdale's innovative sewer system, operational since December 2008, has been getting rave reviews from state officials and notable engineers nationwide. There really are people who pay attention to such things (thank goodness). More than a few visitors have dropped by in recent months to examine its effectiveness and environmentally-friendly approach to waste. Not only does our system achieve its primary goal of reducing health hazards in the hamlet, it also demonstrates next-generation thinking.
Unlike other towns with modest systems, Hillsdale doesn't actually have a sewer processing plant. What we have is an odorless leech field where there is no discharge (located in a field southeast of Agway). We won't trouble you with the details here but feel free to ask the Sewer Committee, chaired by Augie Sena, for more information.
