Summertime and the season in Hillsdale is in full swing.  We'll be sending you our newly-designed newsletter/calendar monthly so you can keep on top of everything that's happening in town:  farmer's market, park programs, new library kids' programs and more...

Committees
Green Solutions Group
The Green Solutions Group will meet on Thursday, June 17th at 5:00 at Town Hall.  Special guest will be Sarah Charlop-Powers, a consultant to NYSERDA on energy conservation.
 
The July meeting of the Green Solutions Group will be Thursday, July 8th at 5:00 at Town Hall.
 
The Hillsdale Green Solutions Committee will be conducting and sponsoring several interesting and informative demonstrations at the Hillsdale Farmer's Market:
 
June 19th:  "How to Build a Compost Bin" at the Hillsdale Farmer's Market.
 
July 17th:  The Committee will be sponsoring a cooking presentation, "From Garden to Table" with Ruth Dufault and Gert Alper, chef-owner of the Swiss Hutte on Saturday, July 17th at 10:30 at the Farmer's Market.
 
Green Solutions "Tip of the Month"----Water is our most precious commodity.  Please conserve it!  Install a low flow showerhead and shorten your shower!  No need to sing a complete opera while sudsing!  Turn off the water while you're brushing your teeth.........protect our water supply.

Flea Market 2009Town-Wide Flea Market - Memorial Day Weekend

May 29, 8:30 am - 2:30 pm
Hamlet Park, behind Town Hall.

The Town Park will be filled with treasures big and small,  antiques, and a big book sale!  Area merchants will be there with big sales!

The Giant Flea Market was a major, fun town event last year, filled with amazing treasures from the homes of town residents.  So come on down and see what you can find!  All proceeds will benefit town beautification projects. There were some amazing items last year, including gorgeous antique cameras and a rowboat!  Someone found a Tiffany bowl priced at $3!  There will be food for sale as well, courtesy of the Hillsdale Fire Department.  And a hay ride!  A book sale will benefit the Roe Jan Library.

You can still donate items by bringing them directly to the flea market and giving them to a volunteer.  more info

Hillsdale Farmer's Market opens 2010 season on Saturday, June 5

Golf Tournament benefits Roe Jan Library Sunday, June 13
Registration 7:30 am - 12 noon.  Undermountain Golf Course, Copake.

Two person teams will play in a dual shotgun, 18 hole scramble. Prizes for men's, women's and mixed teams, hole-in-one, and closest to the pin. The $65 per person entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, home baked breakfast goodies, lunch, snacks and a BBQ chicken dinner prepared by the Ancram Fire Department. Non-golfers can enjoy the dinner for $15.   Pick up an entry form at the library or call the course at 329-4444.

The Sun, Earth's star, is a great fireball that radiates heat and light so powerful that it makes life possible on our planet 93 million miles away!  Making a sun dial is surprisingly easy, and will teach our kids about how the solar system works.  Families will make a sun dial to bring home, and learn how to make a human sun dial.

Summer Farmscape Ecology Walks begin June 19 with Birds, Butterflies and Meadow Flowers
Saturday, June 19, 2:00-4:00 pm.  Meet in front of Hawthorne Valley Farm Store, Harlemville

These walks take you and the entire family to different parts of Hawthorne Valley Farm, introducing you to different on-farm habitats and their wild inhabitants. Free. No need to register!  For the rest of the schedule, click here.
June Library fundraiser features jazz, food and Alan Chartock as auctioneer
Saturday, June 19, 5:30 - 7:30 pm, the new Roeliff Jansen Community Library
 
Celebrate the Unadorned Library:  Before the carpeting is down and the shelves are up and stocked with books, come raise a glass of wine (or two!), munch on tasty hors d'oeuvres from local restaurants, listen (and dance!) to the great sounds of the George Mandel Jazz Quartet, and enjoy WAMC CEO Alan Chartock, celebrity MC and auctioneer, as he puts some very exciting items on the block in a live auction. Help finish and adorn the library! Tickets are priced at $100 per person, or $175 for two. For tickets and information, please call 329-0182.
Friday, June 25, The Locavore Way...Summer Cooking Series
Begins 5:00, June 25 and monthly,  The Hawthorne Valley Learning Center
 
What better way to cook with farm-fresh food than right here on the farm?  Amy Cotler, locavore extraordinaire, will teach four hands-on cooking classes over the course of the growing season in our new teaching kitchen.  Each session will end with a class-cooked meal.

And cooking opens the door to healthier lifestyles, connecting to the wonder and beauty of nature, learning about nutrition, food and farming, and the traditional crafts that are the natural expression of that connection. Cooking, gardening, animal care, carding, spinning, weaving, clay modeling, and metal working are all part of KIDS! CAN! COOK!
KIDS! CAN! COOK! is open to all children between the ages of 8 and 14 years.

July 6, Town Summer Youth Program begins at Roe Jan Park

Children ages 5-11 can explore the outdoors, hiking on RJP trails, gardening in the community garden, and engaging in lots of fun activities that investigate the natural world.  When it rains, there's a large Community and Recreation Barn for activities like ping pong, making nature oriented crafts or holding hoola hoop contests!

Prepare to get your hands dirty as we examine different types of soils. Children will pretend to become soil particles and water drops, and learn about soil percolation.  Families will make a yummy Oreo "dirt cake" for a delicious ending to a fun day!  For info.

Children who have signed up for the Roe-Jan Park Summer Program and wish to participate in this library program can be dropped off at the library by their parents and we will escort them to the park at 10:00 so they can enjoy the park activities for the rest of the day.
Hillsdale House TourSecond Annual Hillsdale Historic House Tour
July 31, 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

Tour at least three houses and an historic law office, all on Cold Water Street, where 19 buildings are on the National Historic Register.  Plus, hear about the history of the houses, street and town from long time residents.  On the tour will be some of the oldest buildings in the hamlet.  Tickets $20 in advance, $25 the day of the tour. The Hillsdale Historic House Tour is being sponsored by the Hillsdale Preservation Committee.  Proceeds will help the committee to continue its work to protect the historic character of the town of Hillsdale.
