Greetings!

With summer coming to an end and students returning to school, September is typically a busy time for employers looking to fill open job positions. Several hiring fairs are taking place over the next 4 to 6 weeks, recruiting for skilled employees for all industries. Open Door Group is hosting job fairs at various locations over the next 8 weeks as part of our mission to connect businesses with a skilled and diverse workforce.

Over the past few weeks, Open Door Group has conducted a series of surveys and outreach initiatives to connect with businesses and find out about their diversity hiring practices. The feedback is telling - many BC businesses are interested in learning how diversity hiring can impact their business and are looking for information on how to get started. In response to this feedback, we have developed an Employer Diversity Forum. The forum is a progressive network of business leaders that focuses on how diversity affects Canadian businesses.  For more information or to join, please refer to the article in this issue.

We're also excited to be presenting Picture This...International Disability Film Festival on August 26th at District 319 in Vancouver (319 Main Street.)  The festival will include a series of independent films from around the world that focus on disability culture and have been written, produced/directed and or acted by persons with disabilities. For further details, please check out our events page at http://www.opendoorgroup.org/news.php

If you have any questions or input around how Open Door Group can help you meet your hiring needs, please give us a call or send us an email and we would be happy connect with you.

Employer Question:
What does
 'Duty to Accommodate'
mean?

When working with employers, one of the most common questions is around "Duty to Accommodate." What does it mean as an employer? Here is a summary as outlined by the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

Striving to ensure that each individual has genuine, open and unhindered access to services, including employment opportunities.
All Canadians are equal in dignity, rights and responsibilities and are protected by the Coalition of Human Rights against any discrimination on the following grounds:
  • Age, race, color, ancestry, and place of origin
  • Sex and sexual orientation
  • Physical or mental disability
  • Religious or political beliefs
  • Marital or family status and
  • Criminal convictions unrelated to the employment.
Accommodation in the workplace is to seek to build an equal, inclusive environment that respects these differences. Simple things an employer can do to accommodate include:
  • Purchasing or modifying tools, equipment or aids
  • Altering aspects of the job, such as job duties or flexible work   hours
  • Offering access to rehabilitation programs and allowing time off for recuperation
  • Adapting premises to make them accessible
The 'duty to accommodate' legally requires employers to provide these accommodations to the point of undue hardship, without sacrificing the requirements of the job.
Undue hardship occurs when an accommodation creates unmanageable workplace issues for an employer.

 Edo Japan ~
Wants More of our Skilled Job Seekers

Hung Vo at Edo

Finding suitable employees can be a real challenge.  When Edo Japan received 150 applicants from their Craig's List job posting for a Kitchen Helper, they discovered that out of that only four people had the qualifications needed for the job.  One candidate was the right fit for them, and that was an Open Door Group participant, Hung Vo.

Open Door Group assisted Hung in upgrading his cooking skills by getting him his Food Safe certificate and more culinary training at H.A.V.E. Café, as well as computer training to assist him in his job search.  These attributes, along with his infectious smile and warm personality, won Hung the job.  According to his employer, Hung's speed, efficiency, planning skills, independence and accountability make him a very valuable employee.  Bob, the owner of Edo Japan at Brentwood Mall, states that "Hung has a willingness to learn, drive, takes constructive criticism and adapts to change."  Hung is enjoying his job and his bosses.  He says, "Working hard is fun; work hard and you will be successful!"

Hung has been working as Edo's Kitchen Helper since June 2010 and has recently been promoted to Cook.  Bob and Sanaz, Edo's owners, are now looking to back fill Hung's original position as Kitchen Helper and are working with Open Door Group to find another great match.
