Employer Question:
What does Diversity in the Workplace really mean?
"Diversity in the Workplace" and "Diversity Hiring", are both phrases that we are hearing more often in the business community. But what does diversity in the workplace really mean, and why is it important to you as a business owner?
Diversity in the workplace refers to a "diverse" workforce that includes individuals of different genders, ages, ethnic backgrounds, (dis)abilities, etc. Diversity hiring presents a strong business case. Some major points include:
Connect with your customers: Employing a diverse team provides you access to information towards better understanding the marketplace in which you operate. Capitalize on skills and experience: Diversity brings a larger pool of specific skills, experience, and insight which can result in effective decision making and increased productivity. Reap the benefits of being a strong Corporate Citizen: Establishing your business as a responsible and inclusive corporate citizen has been proven to attract not only customers, but also has a positive correlation with recruiting and retaining employees. In addition, many companies are starting to seek out socially responsible suppliers to partner with. Stay competitive!

Canadian Tire and Open Door Group Make A Great Team ~
Work Experience Partnership

Canadian Tire believes in the philosophy of giving back to the communities that they operate in and a strategy to achieve this is through actively partnering with Open Door Group. Canadian Tire is a nation wide, well recognized retailer and respected employer, providing job opportunities from customer service, to warehousing and administration. As a result of the relationship developed between the employment placement team at Open Door Group and Daniel Attridge, Canadian Tire's HR Manager in Vancouver, over the past two months, four successful work experience practicums have been completed. Daniel was happy to offer Open Door Group participants the opportunity to learn new skills relevant to their employment goals while also providing exposure to all aspects of their business. Canadian Tire benefited from the experience as it encouraged team work and an awareness of effective communication. Practicum employees gained valuable skills for employment. They had the opportunity to develop skills in leadership and training while getting exposure to a variety of different tasks and challenges. The participants learned that their disability does not need to affect their work when a position is found that is well suited to them and that people with disabilities can be just as valuable in the work place as any other employee, if not more. The key is to find the right environment and focus on their strengths. This is where Open Door Group's employment placement team comes in; we help match employers with our participants to get the right fit. "It has been wonderful to work with our local Open Door Group over the past few months. Each Canadian Tire store across Canada strives to be involved in the communities we are situated in and we look for opportunities to assist many of our community groups. Working with Open Door Group gives us the chance to assist members of our community to gain experience in a large retail environment through a mentorship and practicum program. We find that these short term placements not only benefit the clients of Open Door Group, but they greatly contribute to our Team. We look forward to a long relationship with Open Door Group." Daniel Attridge, Human Resources Manager,
Canadian Tire Associate Store #389 (Cambie & 7th Ave.) Vancouver, BC.
Open Door Group would like to thank Canadian Tire for providing work experience practicums to our participants. www.canadiantire.ca
