Moving with Lupus
ReganMoves
95% of lupus patients experience joint pain. Over 80% suffer from extreme fatigue. Last week, we told you about a study showing the negative effects lupus has on our quality of life, as well as our quality of living. One way to address the sudden flare ups and the daily struggle of lupus is educating yourself on how to deal with lupus.

Another way is to give your body the opportunity to feel better with exercise. Exercise can help reduce joint pain and fatigue, improve your cardiovascular health, prevent prescription drug side effects, and give you the energy you need. Moving with lupus (at your own pace) can be your beginning of a better day. Read more about the benefits of exercise here.

The LFNC is working on soon providing our clients with an exercise class (we held a pilot class last year) designed specifically for patients with joint pain, fatigue and chronic illness. Stay tuned.
Women's Health and the Affordable Care Act
There has been a lot said about the Affordable Care Act, but what a lot of people are asking is how it will help them in their lives. The Commonwealth Fund has just released a comprehensive study outlining the ACA's benefits for women, especially women with chronic health conditions and in greater need of medical care.

Women face a much higher cost barrier to accessing care both because of the needs for services (especially during pregnancy) as well as an overall lower level of income. In fact, 40% of women report paying $1,000 or more in out of pocket costs for medical expenses. The Commonwealth Fund's report shows how women would benefit from the ACA, including through subsidies for obtaining insurance, no-cost preventive services, and banning gender discrimination in pricing of health insurance.

Help Us be Recognized for Our Hard Work
We could be the top nonprofit on the list of Great Nonprofits for the health category. How cool would that be? If you have been involved with the Lupus Foundation - whether as a client, volunteer, donor or supporter - you know how important the work we do with your help is for the Northern California Lupus community.

You can make sure that LFNC gets the word out on lupus to even more people by giving us a great review. If you believe that together, you and LFNC make a difference, please click here to give us a great review with 5 stars! We are currently competing for the top spot in the health nonprofits category.

In 2010, the Lupus Foundation of Northern California was among the  Top 15 Nonprofit Organizations in the entire U.S. in a campaign launched by GreatNonprofits. With your help, we can continue with this distinction in 2012!

Won't you help us participate in the awards by posting a review of your experience with us? All reviews will be visible to potential donors and volunteers. It's easy and only takes 2 minutes!

If you believe that our work is important, and that we do it well, please visit this page and give us a great review.

Still Seeking Lupus Patients for Clinical Trial of a New Investigational Medicine
Male and female patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) are being sought for a clinical study looking at a possible benefit of an investigational medicine.  The study site is in Roseville, California and in the Sacramento area and will last approximately 56 weeks.

In order to be eligible for the study, patients must be:
  • Between the ages of 18 and 75
  • Experiencing active disease during the time you join the study
  • Receiving treatment for SLE
  • There are also some other medical criteria that must be met for all patients wishing to join the study.  A number of screening tests will determine suitability for the study.
If you or someone you know from the Sacramento area may benefit from this study, please contact Sharon Harp of Med Investigations directly at (916) 966-7452.
