The Supreme Court Has Spoken
For many individuals with chronic illness, including those with lupus, health care takes center stage in their quest for the best quality of life possible. Unfortunately, health care coverage is elusive for some either due to its prohibitive cost or because of other barriers, not the least of which is a pre-existing condition. As a matter of fact, due to the nature of lupus, patients can have multiple pre-existing conditions depending on the number of symptoms associated with this autoimmune disorder that they have been diagnosed with.
The 2010 Affordable Care Act, often referred to as Obamacare, seeks to address these and other health care issues needing reform. Many needed fixes to the health care system are already in place and many more significant changes are scheduled to happen in the next two years.
Today's U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding the 2010 law couldn't have come at a more exciting time for the lupus community, given recent developments in lupus research and treatment. Obamacare will ensure that lupus patients will have access to life-saving treatment and care, including several potential new drugs waiting in the pipelines.
