REDUCING THE RISK OF INFECTION For people with autoimmune diseases, the risk of developing infection from viruses and bacteria may increase. While the link between previous infections and the risk of developing autoimmune disorders continues to be the subject of research, it is a well-known fact that lupus patients and those with other autoimmune disorders may have an elevated risk of viral and bacterial infections due to a compromised immune system resulting from treatment with immunosuppressives.
Lupus patients are therefore encouraged to discuss with their doctors about vaccines that may prevent the onset of flu, pneumonia, HPV, hepatitis and other viral or bacterial infections. Not all vaccines may be recommended for lupus patients, particularly live vaccines and others that may not be appropriate to the conditions or symptoms they are experiencing.

In addition to vaccines, simple, everyday steps and precaution can be taken by those with compromised immune systems, as would be the case for healthy individuals. For example, washing hands often, rubbing them together vigorously with soap and warm water for at least 15 seconds is a prudent thing to do. Also, as much as possible, staying away from people who are sick --in all settings: home, work, hospitals, etc. -- will reduce one's exposure to diseases that may be caused by airborne agents or through direct contact with infected persons.
