Rheumatologist Answers Questions on Flesh-eating Bacteria

Infection with flesh-eating bacteria, a rare condition called necrotizing fasciitis, has struck Aimee Copeland, a 24-year-old Georgia student who reportedly also has lupus. Her case gained national attention because of the courage she has shown in the face of  limb amputation.

WebMD asked Chaim Putterman, MD, chief of rheumatology at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, N.Y. about necrotizing fasciitis and lupus. With colleagues Mohammad Kamran, MD, and Jane Wachs, MD, Putterman recently reported necrotizing fasciitis in eight of the 449 lupus patients treated at their hospital from 1996 through 2007.

LUPUS PATIENTS WANTED FOR DEVICE PREFERENCE STUDY-Earn $100-$200

Interface Analysis Associates is a Bay Area a consumer research firm, located at the border of Saratoga and San Jose, that conducts studies of medical devices and drug delivery systems in order to make them safer and easier to learn and use. We have been in business for 20 years and help improve patient safety by involving actual patients in the study of new products, before they enter the market!

Our studies involve exposing patients to new devices, concepts and prototypes and observing how easy they are to learn and use, and obtaining feedback and preferences. Your participation allows you to directly influence the design of the device, procedure, instructions and labeling. These studies are typically brief, the products are unique and intriguing to work with, and you will be well paid, in cash, for your time and feedback. Note that all of our studies are "non-invasive", which means that you are never asked to take any medication or inject anything into your body. Everything is simulated or performed into a skin pad.

Currently, we have several upcoming studies involving products for Lupus patients, paying from $100-$200 for 60-120 minutes. Please contact us at (408) 834-8443 or iaa_research@yahoo.com to participate.

We are pleased to announce the winner of the T-Shirt Design Contest for this year's 5K Run and Walk for Lupus: OLIVIA LAULETTA of Moorpark, California! Olivia is 15 years old and a tenth grader at La Reina High School. She wins a $200 prize.

"I made my piece in my graphic design class originally just as a project to turn in. I thought the (T-shirt design) contest was for a great cause and the more I learned about it the more I wanted to submit my design," she says. "Little did I know that my class assignment would be picked to win. I am honored that my design will get to represent the Lupus Foundation for the 2012 5K Run and Walk."

The judging committee found her design to smartly represent the theme of this year's event, "Double the Pace for a Lupus cure." LFNC Executive Director Rene Astudillo said that "her design depicts the fact that if we double our efforts, the faster we can reach our goal and vision for a cure. It also represents the fact that small steps, if done as a group or as a community, will result in a much bigger stride."
