All About TTP
Some diseases and conditions, INCLUDING LUPUS, can possibly cause or lead to Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, or TTP, a blood disorder that causes blood clots to form in small blood vessels throughout the body.
Blood clots can limit or block the flow of oxygen to the brain, kidneys and heart, causing serious health problems. TTP can also affect the level of blood platelets which help form blood clots. With decreased platelets, bleeding problems can occur inside the body, underneath the skin, or from the surface of the skin.
TTP, though rare, can be fatal or cause lasting damage such as brain damage or stroke if not treated right away. Treatments for TTP include infusions of fresh frozen plasma and plasma exchange -- both of which have greatly improved the outlook of this disorder.
To learn more about TTP, types of TTP, causes, diagnosis and treatment, click HERE.
In last week's newsletter, we talked about the late J Dilla, famed American record producer who passed away from lupus and TTP.
Also, in one of our featured videos on the LFNC YouTube Channel, Evanne Grate, a Web designer from San Francisco and co-facilitator of our San Francisco subchapter, talks about her experience with lupus, including TTP which almost cut her life short. Click below to watch video.
