METABOLIC SYNDROME AND LUPUS
Metabolic syndrome is a name for a group of risk factors that occur together and increase the risk for heart disease, stroke, atherosclerosis, and diabetes. Studies have shown a correlation between metabolic syndrome and inflammation, as well as disease activity (progression and severity) in lupus.
Having 3 of the following 5 conditions constitutes a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome:
- Large waistline: more than 35" for women and 40" for men
- High triglycerides: more than 150
- High fasting blood sugar: more than 100
- High blood pressure: higher than 130/85
- Low HDL (good cholesterol): under 50 for women and under 40 for men
Experts recommend exercise, weight loss and an adaptive diet for people diagnosed with the syndrome. Quitting smoking is also advised.
At LFNC's 2011 Fall Lupus Mini-Conference held November 5, 2011 at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara, certified nutrition consultant Kandice Stellmon discussed metabolic syndrome - what it is and how to treat it. View the following short video clips from the conference:
