Medications and Bone Loss

An increasing number of medications are being linked to bone loss and fractures. These drugs include thiazolidinedione (TZD),  for type 2 diabetes; or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, a class of antidepresents that includes Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft.

This problem may very well apply to lupus patients who, due to the myriad of symptoms and conditions they experience, have been prescribed a long list of medications by their doctors.

Other medications linked to bone loss include corticosteroids which are often prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions like lupus.

As always, if you have concerns about your medications, discuss them with your health care provider.

Question on Prostate Cancer in Lupus

We received a question from a male client about the possible risk of prostate cancer among lupus patients.

One study conducted by researchers at the McGill University Health Center in Canada suggests a decreased risk of prostate cancer in S.L.E., with the caveat that more definite conclusions require additional data and further studies in large cohorts.

Read study abstract.
