POOR MEDICATION ADHERENCE IS A NATIONAL PROBLEM

prescription drugsIt is estimated that nearly three out of four Americans don't take their medications as directed, resulting in serious health consequences, especially for people with chronic diseases.  Many factors contribute to non-adherence, but the effect is always the same -- patients are putting their health and their future at risk.

This problem may very well apply to lupus patients who, due to the myriad of symptoms and conditions they experience, have been prescribed a long list of medications by their doctors.

Script Your Future is a national campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of medication adherence as a vital first step toward better health outcomes.

In addition to patients, it is important that others be involved in medication adherence, namely: family members, pharmacists, doctors, health advocacy  and community groups, and schools.  They are all part of the patients' support system to ensure medication adherence.

With initial grant support from LRI, researcher Dr. Timothy Niewold at the University of Chicago has made great headway in uncovering some of the genes that may predispose African Americans to lupus.
