Horse Sales - When Does a Buyer Have "First Dibs?"

Equine Legal SolutionsQ:  I have a horse advertised for sale online.  Buyer A exchanged lots of emails with me and came out to look at the horse.  Buyer A liked the horse and offered me $2,000 less than I was asking.  I said no.  Two weeks later, Buyer A called me back and wanted to vet check my horse.  I said okay and continued to advertise the horse for sale.  One day before the scheduled vet check, Buyer B came out to look at the horse, liked him, and offered me full price in cash.  I sold the horse to Buyer B, then called Buyer A and told her to cancel the vet check.  Now, Buyer A is mad and said she had the legal right to vet check the horse before I sold him to someone else.  Who's right?  Read the full article by Equine Legal Solutions.

In Tough Financial Times, Should You Let The Boarding Stable Use Your Horse For Lessons?

"I'm falling behind on my payments to the boarding stable. The stable has offered to cut my board fee if I allow it to use my horses for its riding lessons. Is this a good idea?"  Read the full article by Julie Fershtman, sponsored by C. Jarvis Insurance Agency.

USEF Passes New Safety Helmet Rules For Eventing And Dressage Riders

Riding HelmetOn January 23, The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) approved new helmet rules for riders in both eventing and dressage. The first rule change requires anyone on a horse to wear a ASTM/SEI-approved helmet at all times while mounted on competition grounds at U.S. nationally rated eventing competitions. The rule change is effective immediately. The second rule change is effective March 1, 2011, for dressage. It requires anyone mounted on a horse, except those riders age 18 and over, to wear protective headgear while on horses that are competing only in FEI levels and tests at the Prix St. Georges level and above (including FEI Young Rider Tests, the USEF Developing Prix St. Georges Test and the USEF Brentina Cup Test).
