Wakefield Estate

"The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown, of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown." -Traditional English Christmas carol

As I am writing this, the thermometer outside reads 49 degrees! If it weren't for the shortening of the days and the lengthening of the shadows, we might forget that we are quickly approaching the long nights of winter. This is usually a time of getting ready and preparing for the harsh days ahead. While we've been busy raking the volumes of leaves now fully off the trees, I have had trouble resisting the temptation to wear my shorts while doing the job. The warmer-than-usual weather these past few weeks has lulled me into a complacency that this mild weather will continue into March. But if nature is a good guide, I should pay heed to the red squirrel outside my window, hastily gathering acorns and seeds and get to work chopping firewood! And though the inevitable storms will no doubt bring with them cancelled school and commuting challenges, a glance at images from last winter remind us that it can be both beautiful as well as rejuvenative for nature. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Wakefield Estate Lauded for

School - Community Partnership

At the 5th Annual Boston Environmental Education & Employment Showcase on October 28, the Wakefield Estate received the School - Community Partnership award from the Boston Youth Environmental Network (BYEN). The award recognizes our work with Boston schools to provide field learning opportunities for children. The Wakefield Estate is deeply honored by this acknowledgment of our commitment to the Boston Public School students. We are also extremely grateful to BYEN's "GOAL" grant program (Get Out And Learn) which supports the cost of transportation to bring hundreds of school children from Boston to the Wakefield Estate for day-long field experiences in the fall and then again in the spring. Thank you BYEN!

Bundle up for Winterfire!

Saturday, January 7, 5:00-7:00 pm

Join us for Winterfire, our second annual mid-winter evening garden stroll and open house.  Like last year, we will mix lightscape with landscape to highlight many of our signature trees and garden features. New this year, pending adequate snow cover, we will lead an easy, moon-lit X-C ski tour through the woods and gardens, ending at a rousing bonfire for some apres -ski hot chocolate and roasted sausage. For those who prefer warming up to an indoor fire, enjoy a cup of hot cider in the Isaac Davenport mansion. Dress warmly and bring a friend! Call 617-333-0924 for more information.

This event is somewhat weather dependent, so please check out website or Facebook page on January 7 after 1:00 pm in the event of a storm.
