Once again it's time for you to do the craziest thing---park your car in the church lot, adorn it with
decorations, and then hand out candy left and right to little princesses, cowboys, goblins and wizards!
Each year we host Trunk-or-Treat for our community and friends. We hope not just our children will
come, but those in the neighborhood-plus your own kids, grandkids, neighbors, friends and family. And
grown-ups, too, of course!
Hotdogs, chips & drinks will be served for $2 per person. No reservation required! Just show up!
Mark your calendar for the Sunday before Halloween!

NORTHSIDE NOTES - October 3, 2012 |
|
By James Lamkin
Gracias, Mucho Gracias
Every day on the Camino de Santiago, I floated on the updraft of gratitude. I called it my Gracias Tour.
Days of solitude, seasoned with great times of community, plus the awareness that I walked daily where for 1,000 years "angels' feet have trod," joyfully embraced me. I had time to reflect on my life: the eras and the errors, successes and stumbles. All-in-all, as I looked through the rearview mirror, my response was gratitude. Gracias. Mucho Gracias, I said to God, the cosmos, and thousands of pilgrims I met along the way.
I said it as I thought of you.
This past Sunday's 60th Anniversary was another opportunity to do so again.
I echoed Mike Gregg's and Dave Wooten's words as they bragged on Melissa Bryson at the Sunday afternoon luncheon under the big top. She graciously and generously masterminded and choreographed the many moving parts of the celebration. From big picture to small detail, she thought of and implemented actions and recruited good people to help.
Gracias, Melissa. Gracias.
Turns out, the 60th Anniversary meant more than I knew. A year ago when we started planning, the word was, "Well, 60 deserves a celebration...but not as big a party as 50, nor as large as 75...just a good gathering."
I was wrong about that. The church needed it more than I realized. I think our extensive NDBC Alumni Association needed it more than I realized. Plus, I needed it more than I realized! The ritual of pausing and saying, "'Tis grace hath brought us safe thus far...," was a seminal ceremony that we were begging to say. Yay us! And more importantly, Yay God!
My gracias goes to all of you who had a hand in the celebration: hauling chairs, wrangling kids, repairing kneelers, building the banner, acquiring the anniversary anthem, cobbling the pictorial directory, landscape grooming, artist organizing, organ readying, and staff encouraging.
Oh yes, the NDBC staff! Gracias, Mucho Gracias to my staff colleagues (Mike, Zach, Paul, Jeff, Rose, Renee, Richard, and Edith) who did so much behind the scenes that made the scenery even more beautiful. All I did was show-up.
In a way, I felt that the 60th Anniversary homecoming was the last step of my Camino sojourn. The labyrinth of gratitude had been walked, all the way to the center and then back to the rim of beginning again. In benediction, I say: Gracias, Mucho Gracias to y'all...all y'all. |
Pastor's Wednesday Morning Bible Study
September 12-November 14, 2012
@ 10:30 AM in the Conference Room
Beginning on Wednesday, September 12, from 10:30-11:30 AM, in the Conference Room. I once again will offer a Fall Bible Study. This year we will study each upcoming Sunday's four lectionary texts: Old Testament, Psalm, Epistle, and Gospel. There will be study sheets distributed in advance containing each of the scriptures.
I am excited about this because the group's insights will help me prepare for the upcoming Sunday's sermon based on these same texts.

Post 60th Anniversary Celebration
The 60th Anniversary Celebration was amazing thanks to the numerous volunteers that made it happen. I'd like to thank all of those who contributed to making the weekend so much fun. Thank you to the Worship and Music Ministry Team, under the leadership of Sheila Nicol and Syd Janney, for the vision and execution on the banner and the anthem. Thank you to Myrtie Cope for dedicating her time to take such beautiful portraits for the pictorial directory and to Bruce Dick and Barbara Atchley for adding candid photos for both the pictorial directory and bulletin board. Many thanks to all of the contributors to the last decade of history including: Mary Margaret High, Cathy Wooten, Irwin Ray, Kay Braswell, Geneva Hall-Shelton, Karen Massey, David Bell, Marshall Dewell, Hartwell Dew, Susan Harlan, James Lamkin and Mike Gregg. Thank you to Vanessa Johnson for being so willing to donate any and all of the preschool supplies for our use for the Saturday family day. Thanks to Cheryl Dewell for her expertise in planning and her creativity for all of the decorations. Hal Meeks, what can I say, you rocked the tent Friday and gave us all a very special evening. Much appreciation for Susan Dew for being by my side on Sunday to do whatever she could to help. And many, many thanks to all of the staff for all of my last minute requests for help and their willingness to ensure the weekend was a success. I even suppose I must thank Jordan Clark for asking me to do this in the first place, it really was a lot of fun. There were so many who helped with tasks big and small...too many individuals... and thus many folks who are left unnamed. However, I am the most grateful to Mark, Lindsey and Katherine for tolerating my mood swings, supporting the family in my absence and constantly reminding me of God's grace.
But, we are not done yet with the Art of Being Northside Drive. Ruth Kramedjian is organizing a year-long spotlight on NDBC artists that will be a fantastic way to get to know the amazing talents that reside within our congregation.
It takes a village to make something like this happen and I am so very grateful for the village we call NDBC.
Thank you,
Melissa Bryson |

Artist in the Narthex
As a continued celebration of our 60th Anniversary over the next twelve months, we will be privileged to see the work of twelve visual artists from our congregation. We will have works by a wood turner, a painter, a quilter, a photographer, a weaver---all on a Sunday morning, before and after worship, in the Narthex. Look for the notices in the Pinnacle and the eNotes, and celebrate the visual arts at Northside Drive Baptist Church. |
Susan Harlan
Artist in the Narthex
October 14, 2012
Susan Harlan will exhibit her fiber art, woven and knitted pieces, on Sunday, October 14, in the Narthex, before and after our worship service. Susan graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelor of Visual Arts degree and a major in fabric design, with an emphasis in weaving. However, her life path led in the direction of the family business, the Vickery Hardware Store in Smyrna, which is an iconic store for those of us who love old fashioned hardware stores.
Susan returned to her loom after some times of deep despair - loss of her husband in 2003 and fighting her own battle against cancer in 1996 and again in 2010. She recalled the joy of creating with her hands at the loom and found her way back to a creative life. In her own words: I found that although I could not remember everything I had learned, my hands had muscle memory, and the rhythm and motion of the loom became a balm to my soul.
And so she weaves: the woven strip in the middle of our new 60th Anniversary banner was woven by Susan; lucky friends might receive a scarf or dish towel; on a floor loom at the Spruill Center, she is currently weaving a fine handkerchief for her son; and you will see a work in progress, a scarf, on her table loom.
Susan has also initiated a Prayer Shawl Ministry for NDBC. This group meets once a month (third Wednesday night of each month) to knit and/or crochet, producing prayers shawls that are distributed to those who are ill or in crisis.
We welcome Susan to the Narthex and invite you to stop by and see her fiber art work. |

 NDBC Preschool's
4th Annual Silent Auction
Our 4th Annual Silent Auction will take place the week of November 5-9. Our goal this year is to raise $15,000, which will help us purchase new technology equipment and repair and upgrade some of the existing computers. The Auction is our main fundraiser during the year which enables us to offer some enrichment opportunities that tuition alone cannot cover. During the past couple of years, auction proceeds have allowed us to create a new library, purchase new furniture, display boards, and light tables, and offer Mandarin to all our 3, 4, and 5 year olds.
Here is how you can help:
-- Make a donation of an item or a service you provide, to be auctioned. We have a great list of suggestions available in the Preschool.
-- You can bid, bid, and bid! All items can be previewed on line at ndbcpreschool.org, or in person during the week of November 5. Winners will be announced on Friday, November 9, at 1:30 PM.
-- Tell others about our auction and invite them to bid along. Many cash and carry items will be available too.
The mission of the Preschool is to lay a foundation for lifelong learning in the loving and safe environment that Northside Drive Baptist Church offers. With your help we can achieve this and so much more. |
