Operation Touch:
Telling Stories with Dr. Bedford Davis
Anniversary Sunday, September 30
Room #202 at 1 PM
As the church celebrates its 60th Anniversary, we remember the medical mission project, Operation Touch, which took place forty years ago. This Sunday, September 30, Dr. Bedford Davis will be in Room #202 of the Education Building beginning at 1 PM, to show pictures and tell many stories of the group's work in Honduras and the Caribbean Islands. Get your BBQ lunch, make your way over to Room #202, and join Dr. Bedford Davis on Anniversary Sunday as he relives Operation Touch through images and stories. |
"GOD IS NO/WHERE...GOD IS NOW/HERE"
By James Lamkin
While walking the Camino de Santiago, I often thought of a well-worn phrase from church youth camp in the 60's. Along with songs like I Wish We'd All Been Ready and some of the Rapture movies and singing Amazing Grace to the tune of House of the Rising Sun, there was one more memory.
There was the story of the teenager who had written his anger and sadness on the bedroom wall: GOD IS NO WHERE! A friend walks in and says, "You have divided the words in the wrong place. It is not that God is NO/WHERE; the truth is that GOD IS NOW/HERE!"
It's a corny story, but it gets at the thin line between a kind of philosophical nihilism and a theological omnipresence. It is a paradigm paradox. God cannot be found anywhere (any one place), because God is everywhere.
That enigma was the engine that pulled me every step of the Camino's 500 miles. There were no ecstatic moments when the presence of God set on fire a burning bush; no times when a statue of Mary began to talk; and no encounters with any middle-eastern pilgrim with nail-scarred hands.
However, the sky was so blue it hurt my eyes. The occasional slow rain conversed with me like a close friend. The "Buen Camino" of a fellow pilgrim who had also made it, breathless, to the top of the mountain, and though winded, had enough breath for a blessing for the next sojourner in this relay race of faith. Plus there was the roaring sound of dead silence as I sat on a rock by the road and looked in all directions and watched the earth curve.
An atheist could argue that God is NO/WHERE; and, of course, he would be right. And a believer could say, "God is NOW/HERE," and she, too, would be correct.
The bottom line for me was the gift of presence. That's how God showed-up: through the luxury of time, plus the slow pace of tempo, with the just-when-needed assistance of fellow pilgrims, along with the deliberate but drenching notion of transcendence. God was NOW/HERE. Amen. |
Pastor's Wednesday Morning Bible Study
September 12-November 14, 2012
@ 10:30 AM in the Conference Room
Beginning on Wednesday, September 12, from 10:30-11:30 AM, in the Conference Room. I once again will offer a Fall Bible Study. This year we will study each upcoming Sunday's four lectionary texts: Old Testament, Psalm, Epistle, and Gospel. There will be study sheets distributed in advance containing each of the scriptures.
I am excited about this because the group's insights will help me prepare for the upcoming Sunday's sermon based on these same texts.

A Look at Hymnody
Led by Mary Kate Christian
Wednesdays, September 12-October 3
@ 7 PM in the Parlor
Given the richness of tradition at Northside Drive, Intern Mary Kate Christian would like to take an in-depth look at hymns and how they shape our theology. She hopes to explore both the texts and music of hymns found in the Northside Drive hymnal and the supplement provided to look at the theology behind the writers' words, the biblical texts supporting the hymns, and how the music affects the words and our emotions while hearing and singing the songs. She will offer the opportunity for members to suggest hymns for the following week's study so that the hymns are hymns that are enjoyed by and familiar to a majority of participants. |

And Your Daughters Shall Prophesy:
Sermons by Women in Baptist Life
Edited by: Karen Massey
As long as there have been Baptists in America, there have been female Baptist ministers and preachers. Unfortunately, some Baptist denominations have not always been kind to them. Due to theological debate, often the existence of these female ministers has been ignored, and their words have not been recorded. This book of sermons seeks to record the words, insights, and experiences of several women ministers and preachers so as not to become part of the lost generations of women who have gone before them. This book is practical in its arrangement for classroom use or group readings.

 NDBC Preschool's
4th Annual Silent Auction
Our 4th Annual Silent Auction will take place the week of November 5-9. Our goal this year is to raise $15,000, which will help us purchase new technology equipment and repair and upgrade some of the existing computers. The Auction is our main fundraiser during the year which enables us to offer some enrichment opportunities that tuition alone cannot cover. During the past couple of years, auction proceeds have allowed us to create a new library, purchase new furniture, display boards, and light tables, and offer Mandarin to all our 3, 4, and 5 year olds.
Here is how you can help:
-- Make a donation of an item or a service you provide, to be auctioned. We have a great list of suggestions available in the Preschool.
-- You can bid, bid, and bid! All items can be previewed on line at ndbcpreschool.org, or in person during the week of November 5. Winners will be announced on Friday, November 9, at 1:30 PM.
-- Tell others about our auction and invite them to bid along. Many cash and carry items will be available too.
The mission of the Preschool is to lay a foundation for lifelong learning in the loving and safe environment that Northside Drive Baptist Church offers. With your help we can achieve this and so much more. |
