What a Life! What a Wonderful Life!
Rev. James E. Lamkin
I frequently thought of a line from Uncle Bill while I was walking the Camino de Santiago.
He had told me of writing a testimonial paper for a class he was taking at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church years ago. The essay was his autobiography. However, he struggled to find the proper opening line.
Uncle Bill was an editor...by trade and by heart. He never read anything without a proofreader's blue pencil nearby. (After he died, Aunt Jane passed along a folder of my church newsletter articles he kept; and yes, they were all marked-up!) Uncle Bill would have affirmed Mark Twain's saying, "The difference between the right word and the almost-right word is the difference between a lightning bolt and a lighting bug."
One day, Uncle Bill called to say, "I found it: the proper opening line." He then told me: "What a life! What a wonderful life!" His voice carried a writer's enthusiasm of discovery: the right sequence, cadence, and movement.
The opening line stretched like a wingspan; and the words which followed were winds beneath them.
I, too, echo Uncle Bill's epitaph. The Camino's distant vistas, blue skies, endless paths, rugged mountains, hot sun, and drenching rains became projection screens for me to visualize the topography of grace I have traveled in my life. Plus, I gave thanks for my traveling companions. I am glad to say that NDBC is among that number; and I might add, being with you these years has made me more adventurous.
What a life! What a wonderful life! Amen. |

Pastor's Wednesday Morning Bible Study
September 12-November 14, 2012
@ 10:30 AM in the Conference Room
Beginning on Wednesday, September 12, from 10:30-11:30 AM, in the Conference Room. I once again will offer a Fall Bible Study. This year we will study each upcoming Sunday's four lectionary texts: Old Testament, Psalm, Epistle, and Gospel. There will be study sheets distributed in advance containing each of the scriptures.
I am excited about this because the group's insights will help me prepare for the upcoming Sunday's sermon based on these same texts.

Mike's Memos
Learning, Meeting, and Growing
Wednesday nights have been the cornerstone of Christian religious education and music ministry practices in the Baptist tradition for generations. From Training Union, to GAs, RAs, children and adult choir practice, and Bible study, Wednesday nights have helped to build a culture of learning, living, and loving in the lives of Christians. Northside Drive desires to keep up with changing work schedules, widening school activities, and a more difficult commute into town by continuing to offer a unique format for Wednesday night programming.
The staff of Northside Drive would like to encourage the creativity of the congregation regarding planning, leading, and implementing Wednesday night activities. The church will be open Wednesday nights for childcare, music rehearsals, small groups, workshops and committee meetings. The ministerial staff will also be available for coaching, counseling, or simply to share a cup of coffee with you. A regular Wednesday night meal and worship service will no longer be available, yet food can be ordered in advance for any group that would like to include it in their meeting.
This adapted Fall Wednesday schedule will begin on September 12, 2012 and conclude November 14, 2012. The hours the church will be open, a minister present, and childcare provided will be 6 PM to 9 PM. Many opportunities are available including a bible study on Genesis, a discussion group on atomic energy, a look at the importance of hymnody, Music Together for families, practicing with the Sanctuary Choir and a "This I Believe" workshop. All groups will be publicized and updated on the "Bible Studies and Fellowships" tab of the website. If your committee or small group would like to use the facilities, please schedule your time and room with Renee Gamache, the Administrative Assistant. To schedule a session with a minister please contact the minister directly.

A Look at Hymnody
Led by Mary Kate Christian
Wednesdays, September 12-October 3
@ 7 PM in the Parlor
Given the richness of tradition at Northside Drive, Intern Mary Kate Christian would like to take an in depth look at hymns and how they shape our theology. She hopes to explore both the texts and music of hymns found in the Northside Drive hymnal and the supplement provided to look at the theology behind the writers' words, the biblical texts supporting the hymns, and how the music affects the words and our emotions while hearing and singing the songs. She will offer the opportunity for members to suggest hymns for the following week's study so that the hymns are hymns that are enjoyed by and familiar to a majority of participants. |

2012 Habitat for Humanity Build
September 29, October 6 & 13, & November 3 & 10
For more than 20 years Northside Drive has been building homes for and with families in Atlanta Habitat for Humanity's home ownership program. Volunteers from our church have installed windows, painted siding and planted trees alongside the homeowners of the Habitat homes. Each homeowner has their own unique story of what the new Habitat home means to them, but a common theme runs through every story-building a strong and stable future for a family.
This year we start another house, for another family---and WE NEED YOUR HELP. Please sign up to volunteer for one of the build dates below. You don't have to have experience, skill or even coordination---just a willingness to help. Everything else they will teach you!
For more information on how to sign up, please contact Geneva Hall-Shelton at geneva.hall-shetlon@atlantahabitat.org, or Beth Laxton at laxton2125@charter.net. |
