Duct Tape, Vaseline, and Hubris
Books abound and opinions are plentiful about how to walk the Camino de Santiago; but the most helpful piece of advice I found was from a nun, Joyce Rupp. In her book, Walk in a Relaxed Manner, she says, "Bring Vaseline and Duct Tape."
She and a priest/friend walked the Camino several years ago; and the book tells of their journey. She said: every morning as you prepare to walk, put a light coating of Vaseline on your feet. It will cut-down on the friction that makes for blisters. Then, when you feel a hot-spot developing, stop immediately and put duct tape over it.
That's it: the law and the prophets of walking 500 miles.
Her coaching saved me. Remarkably, I had almost no foot problems, while most of my colleagues did; and it is hard to out-walk foot trouble.
The one blister I did have, about the size of a dime, occurred when I thought I had outgrown Rupp's elementary advice. I had been on the Camino about three weeks. I had toughened-up and slimmed-down. I was a veteran, no longer a rookie. So, I by-passed the Vaseline ritual one morning.
That was the day I got the blister.
The Camino's consistent gift to pilgrims is humility. It is an antidote for hubris---that word from Greek literature that describes the hero's overestimation of his or her own capacity.
Thomas Merton said, "When it comes to prayer, we remain amateurs all of our lives."
Thus, today's "to do" list: pray, love, delight, act compassionately, be humble...and bring Vaseline and Duct Tape. |

Pastor's Wednesday Morning Bible Study
Beginning on Wednesday, September 12, 10:30-11:30 AM, I once again will offer a Fall Bible Study. This year we will study each upcoming Sunday's four lectionary texts: Old Testament, Psalm, Epistle, and Gospel. There will be study sheets distributed in advance containing each of the scriptures.
I am excited about this because the group's insights will help me prepare for the upcoming Sunday's sermon based on these same texts.
