NORTHSIDE NOTES - August 1, 2012 |

By Rev. James E. Lamkin
Saunter, for God's sake!
As I walked across Spain, I read. My first book was, Walking (no surprise there) by Henry David Thoreau written in the 1850's.
He reminds his readers that the holy act of ambling upon the Earth is wrapped into the etymology of the word saunter.
"I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of walking, that is, of taking walks-who had a genius, so to speak, for SAUNTERING." He goes on to tie the word to sainte (holy) and terre (land). Thus, a saunterer was a pilgrim headed for the Holy Land...or perhaps one pretending to be...in hopes of a hand-out. "There goes a Holy-Lander," kids would say, "a saunterer."
So I went sauntering as I shouldered my backpack, picked-up my walking sticks, said a prayer, depended on the hospitality of others, and put on my floppy hat every day for 500 miles. The land was indeed holy land, because it had been walked on for over 1,000 years by Christians. A prayer saturated path.
I believe all land is holy, because of the Holy One who made it and abides in it.
Remember that notion when you go for a walk today. Saunter! And do so for God's sake. |

Touching Taliaferro with Love
From Gregory Rhodes,
Chair of the Touching Taliaferro with Love Board
On behalf of the Touching Taliaferro with Love board and the citizens of Taliaferro County, I would like to take this time to personally thank you for your work this summer. Your dedication and support to the TTWL Day Camp is very much appreciated and I did not want your kindness to go unnoticed.
The kids really had fun and learned a lot. Everything was wonderful. The camp was well organized and well staffed. We hope that you will continue to support the day camp as a part of your mission.
As Jesus has commanded us to go and share the good news, you and your congregation are doing just that. May God continue to bless you and your congregation now and forevermore! Best wishes and we hope to see you next year! |
