Art that Continues Weaving Us into One
Banner to Enhance Worship
In keeping with the theme of Northside Drive's 60th Anniversary, "The Art of Being Northside Drive," the Worship and Music Ministry Team has enlisted liturgical artist Ellen Phillips to create a banner celebrating the liturgical season of Ordinary Time and our anniversary. An important feature of the banner is the participation of members of the church in its creation. Congregation members are strongly encouraged to contribute high quality woven fabrics or textiles, particularly those with special meaning in relation to the life of the church, to be interwoven in creating the banner.
The artist-made banner will be incorporated into the worship service when we celebrate Northside Drive's 60th anniversary on September 30. When not in use in procession, the banner will be placed in the Narthex as an expression of our church's spiritual life together and the season of Ordinary Time. The Memorial Gifts Committee is contributing to this special project.
Contributions of Fabric Requested
+ Examples of material requested to be contributed by church members: wedding dress material of someone married in the church, pastors' stoles from the past, fabric remnants obtained on a church mission trip, fabric from a child's dedication or someone's baptism, self-woven fabric. [please attach a note explaining the significance of the fabric when it is donated]
+ Woven fabrics, as opposed to knitted or stretchy (t-shirt) material, are needed.
+ Fabrics in whites, creams, shades of green (the symbolic color of Ordinary Time) and jewel tones (like the rich colors of the stained glass windows) are desired.
+ Ideal fabric dimensions would be 6-8 inches wide and 36 inches long, but other smaller sized pieces and ribbon can be incorporated.
It should be noted that fabric will not be returnable and the use of specific material will be decided by the artist.
Please contribute material and textiles for Northside Drive's liturgical and 60th Anniversary banner art. Place fabric in the basket placed under the desk in the Narthex-now through July 15.
Contact Sheila Nicol, chair of Worship and Music, at 706-579-1677 or Syd Janney, coordinator of banner art project, at 404-873-4643 with questions or offers of support. |
Mike's Memos
By Rev. Mike Gregg
Being Church to 'Concrete' People
As I was reading a book this week called The Basics of Christian Education, I came across this funny story retold by the author, Karen B. Tye.
There is a funny story told about two neighbors. Let's call them Pete and Sam. Both Pete and Sam were retired and spent a lot of time in their yards and often fell into conversation with each other. One day Sam was complaining about something one of the children in the neighborhood did. Pete immediately chastised him for being so critical. After all, kids will be kids. Pete went on to talk about how much he loved children and about how they were our future. A couple of days later, Sam was in his backyard when he heard loud voices coming from the front. Going around to see what was happening, he saw Pete standing at the end of his driveway, yelling in an angry voice at a group of children who were obviously running to get away. Sam said, "Pete, what's going on? I could hear you clear in the back. Calm down and tell me what happened." Pete, pointing to some newly laid concrete at the end of his drive, said, "Those kids were playing ball and look, one of them hit it right into my new concrete and left a big hole. Kids today are so careless. They run wild. They don't care about other people's property." The tirade went on and on. Finally, Pete paused for a breath and Sam spoke up. "But Pete, you were just telling me the other day about how much you loved kids." Pete sputtered in an angry voice, "Well, yes, I love kids---but in the abstract, not in the concrete!"
We laugh at such an obvious play on words. However, this story has words of truth too. Sometimes it is easier for us to think about people in the abstract, in the generalities that give us a false sense we really know and understand them. We might talk about the young adults, the youth, the senior adults, or the rowdy preschool kids. We might think that these labels tell us everything we need to know. Yet, every child, adult, senior adult, mother, toddler, and youth experience worship and education in differing ways. Jesus calls us to look beyond the surface and past the labels, to believe people can change and grow, to see the possibilities in the mobs of kids or in the leadership of a gruff fisherman like Peter.
As we seek to be church to one another and to the world, it would be wise for us to remember that each human being is particular and unique. As we preach, teach, serve, and love the body of Christ, let us remember that labels might tell us a little bit about a person, but not everything that we need to know. I hope we can be a church that learns every person's story in a real and tangible way. We are a church and a world of concrete, not abstract, people. |
Church Offices Closed July 4-6!
As James has marched his way across much of Spain, our NDBC staff here in Atlanta has also extended themselves in an effort to cover the senior pastor responsibilities while still attending to their own job descriptions. We're grateful for their hard work and their sterling attitude. In appreciation, the church offices will be closed July 5 and 6, so that our staff can enjoy a brief holiday respite with their families. Mike Gregg will remain on call for any emergencies or pastoral care concerns. He can be reached on his mobile phone at 404-861-6859 or on his voicemail at work at 404-237-8621.
