Food for the Stomach and the Soul

I love food. In fact, I will eat almost anything, especially if it is spicy. Raymond Jones tries to outdo me when the senior men eat at Piccadilly by getting more jalapenos than me or peppering his food thoroughly. He would have loved the authentic Mexican food the volunteers and I had at the second Extreme Bedroom Makeover service project at the end of April. The mother of the low-income family owns her own authentic Mexican food truck. She graciously fed us beef, chicken, shrimp, and pork quesadillas and tostadas the Friday night and Saturday afternoon of the makeover. Not only was the food delicious, the homemade jalapeno avocado salsa was "out of this world" spicy! It was by far the most sweat and tear inducing joy I have ever tasted. By giving of my time and energy to help a family in need, my stomach was lovingly fed.

Northside Drive participated in two bedroom makeovers this year for children in low-income families. The kids we helped not only shared small rooms with siblings, but they also had to sleep in the same bed. Northside Drive's Missions Ministry Team as well as John and Rhonda Davis donated the funds, furniture, and volunteers to make it possible to makeover two bedrooms. Each makeover took two days with a significant portion of Friday night and Saturday given to each room. We had a significant group of young adults volunteer their weekends to help these kids in need. These two makeovers, the transformation in the rooms, and the smiles on the children's faces were food for my soul. I can't help but think that I came out of this service project more rewarded than the children who received new bedrooms. I not only was gifted with food for my stomach, but also food for my soul.

"Caring for God's Creation"

The earth is the Lord's,

and everything in it, the world,

and all who live in it.

~ Psalm 24:1

The TTWL Mission Team needs your help! Our theme this summer focuses on caring for all creation-natural resources, animal life and people-so our stories and activities will incorporate the concept of preserving and reusing. We need your help in collecting items to be used for crafts.

There is a box in the Narthex for the following items:

  •  two liter soft drink bottles with or without lids
  •  pie tins
  •  magazines with pictures of plants or animals
  •  paper towel tubes
  •  small sea shells to border picture frames
  •  CD jewel cases

If you want to volunteer to help for one or more days during the week, please contact Rhonda Harris or Susan Harlan.

Volunteers for Our Growing Nursery

As a parent of two children who frequent the nursery (and soon to be three children!), I want to thank those of you who've joined in to make sure that all of our children have safe and positive experiences at church. I want to especially thank the dads who have helped in recent months. Your willingness to help out is greatly appreciated---our church is inclusive in so many ways!

We are now recruiting volunteers to care for children during the Sunday morning worship services for the summer months and beyond. Most of our volunteers are parents with young children, but all are welcome---and we need you! This is a vital area of ministry to our families and kids and your participation is important. If you're available to help out, please let Rev. Mike Gregg or me know and we will add you to the childcare schedule.

With much thanks,

Karen Perry

Northside Drive is Starting a Garden!

Garden       Jillian Farmer and Rhonda Harris have put together a plan for a small church garden that will be located on the lawn behind the Chapel. As part of the missional work of Northside Drive a portion of what is grown will be donated to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The garden will also provide a great chance for fellowship, an opportunity for our kids to learn about the beauty of God's creation, not to mention the tasty benefits of fresh veggies and herbs!

So far we have a great group of volunteers but we are always looking for people who would be willing to donate to this project. If you have any questions or would like to get involved please contact Jillian Farmer at farmerjm0515@gmail.com or Rhonda Harris at rhondakharris@gmail.com.
