"Sabbatical"

On the day after Easter Sunday, April 9, 2012, I leave for a three month pastoral sabbatical.

     Wow.

Sabbatical comes from the biblical word Sabbath which literally means STOP! One stops the daily routine. Stop inattentive living. Stop running the rat race (even if you win, you're still a rat!). Just stop.

Then, upon stopping, remember to pay attention to God.

A sabbatical is not a vacation; though I've given-up trying to convince anyone of that. Nor is it a break from work. Everyone works too hard; and everyone needs a break.

However, a pastoral sabbatical is a change of pace and performance. It is a conscious effort to play one's life to a single audience: God. That doesn't mean that every step feels super sacred; or that a bad word won't be said when you stub your toe---it just means that you are aware that God is not far away.

NDBC created this possibility as a policy in 2003. In 2005 I lived into it and went to Africa and Oxford. It was a high-water mark for the church and me in relationship, renewal and refreshment.

Now, seven years later, it is that time again. The Personnel Committee, chaired by Karen Massey, has been working with the staff regarding my responsibilities while I'm gone. She has recruited preachers, both inside and outside the congregation, to preach on the sabbatical Sundays.

I'm grateful for my ministerial colleagues, Rev. Mike Gregg, Minister of Educational Life, and Rev. Zach Bay, Maddox Pastoral Resident. They will be taking the lead regarding pastoral care, leadership tasks, liturgy, and supporting the deacons in their ministry.

So...what will I do on my pastoral sabbatical? I'm calling it, "Theology and Terrain: The Alchemy of Pilgrimage."

I am going to walk across Spain.

I will walk one of the world's oldest pilgrimages: The Camino de Santiago. In addition, I will be reading ancient Christian theologians who were Spanish mystics: St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and St. Ignatius.

Literally, step by step, I will be tending my spirituality through practices that have nourished Christians for centuries: walking, reading, journaling, praying, and reflecting. I will stop every seventh day for rest and worship.

As Phil Cousineau said: As pilgrims we go back to find something we lost; we return to the source to be restored, rejuvenated, and revivified (Pilgrimage: Adventures of the Spirit).

The Itinerary, April 9-July 9, 2012:

April 9.........Sabbatical Begins

April 25...........Leave for Spain

May 1...............Begin walking

June 15.......Return from Spain

July 9.................Back to work

I will give more sabbatical details in the next Pinnacle. Also, I have made a color brochure that includes even the most difficult of questions: "Why?"

May Lent's lengthening shadows lead us all the way to Easter. Rumor has it that an empty tomb awaits; and it is ready to be filled with Hope.

Easter Lilies
LILYOur personal and community histories have been supported by numerous family and friends both past and present. At Easter, the Flower Ministry Team provides you an opportunity to make a tangible expression for gratitude with Easter lilies on Easter Sunday. Your $20 donation in memory or celebration of loved ones makes this memorial possible. Please sign up on the Easter envelopes provided in the Narthex or send your money to the church office with the information included. Please respond by April 4. For more information see a Flower Ministry Team member.

Missions CornerBuckner

Through the Missions Budget, Northside Drive contributes to more than 25 agencies and organizations. In the next few months we will spotlight some of the groups where our mission dollars are at work.

Buckner Baptist Benevolences (now called Buckner International)was founded in Texas in 1877 through the inspiration and leadership of R.C. Bucker. Today, Buckner International operates programs throughout the world and is one of the largest private social care agencies of its kind in the United States. Buckner International provides services that include:

~ residential child care, orphan care, adoption and foster-care

   services,

~ senior adult services,

~ missionary opportunities,

~ education and job readiness training,

~ global humanitarian aid, medical clinics,

~ global humanitarian aid program, Shoes for Orphan Souls,

which provides shoes for needy children around the world.

At the invitation of former Northside Driver, Mary Keller, our church got involved with the global work of Buckner International when about 20 of our members traveled to Guatemala to work in orphanages in 2006 and 2007. It echoed some aspects of Operation Touch done by Northside Drive in the 1960's. We "airlifted" a Vacation Bible School, some supplies, and ourselves. We gave our time in loving service to kids who needed a lot of love. Also, we were touched by God's love; and we grew in relationship with one another.

To learn more about the work of Buckner or to receive their newsletter, log onto their website www.buckner.org

Children and Youth Waving Palms

Sunday, April 1, at the 11 AM Worship Service

Attention all children and youth! Sunday, April 1, is Palm Sunday! We want you to help us praise Jesus in worship by waving palm branches in the air! Please meet Mr. Mike in the Narthex before the 11 AM Worship Service on April 1, to get your palm branches and instructions about waving them in the service. Bring a friend to Palm Sunday!

Participate in a Passover Seder Service

Wednesday, April 4, at 6:45 PM

Every spring, our Jewish brothers and sisters celebrate the Passover feast. It is an eight day celebration, begun with the Seder, the Passover Meal. Passover is one of the high holidays-the most holy of days-in the Jewish year. It marks the single most important event in Jewish history, the Exodus from Egypt. And Passover is a joyous celebration. In that event, God delivered a people from oppressive slavery, and called them to be the people that would make this God known to the rest of the world.

Celebrate the Passover Seder Service at Northside Drive on Wednesday night, April 4, at 6:45 PM, in the Fellowship Hall. Please make reservations through Renee Gamache at 404-237-8621.

Children's Easter Egg Hunt
