Pastoral Reflections
By James Lamkin "Peacock, Alberson, and Dutton" On the corner of my desk, a time capsule sits. Ten years ago, on the way to our church's 50th anniversary, we recorded some of our earliest stories by some of our earliest storytellers. Cathy Wooten and Lewis Baumstark got it done. The video tapes have now been transferred to DVD's and they sit on the corner of my desk. Not only are these a time capsule, they are a time machine. As I sit and watch I am transported. Lois Peacock is there, right there, standing straight and tall in Fellowship Hall. With the comedic timing and dead-pan delivery of George Burns, she tells the tales of a school teacher in rural Georgia "back in the day." There's the time she was almost fired because she wore pants while riding a horse. There was the time when she couldn't get home for Christmas. Everything had iced over; and the only way out of town was in a truck. However, it was forbidden for a single woman to ride in a truck cab with a man. So she chained a sled to the bumper and off she went, suitcase it tow. Next, there is Fisher and Marjorie Alberson in their apartment at St. Anne's Terrace. They told stories of "NDBC...The Early Years." Fisher chuckles and rattles on about the infamous "trip to Canada for the World Baptist Youth Conference." He drove his brand new car, a Cadillac, I believe, and pulled a fully loaded trailer of supplies. A ton of bottled Coca-Cola's had been donated for this cross-country Corps of Discovery; and no Coke was left behind. What they brought back were stories of burned-up transmissions, dented trunk-lids, unavailable suitcases, Fisher's wearing the same clothes day-after-day, and...a good time being had by all. Marjorie's recollections were less comical. She spoke of troubles during the church's adolescence, as well as her efforts at being a bridge over troubled waters. Then, there is Mary Dutton holding court! She speaks of her early days as one of Georgia's first female CEO's. She has charts and graphs and newspaper clippings around the lectern that warn of Georgia's impending water shortage. With force and poise she tells of elbowing her way through a man's world. When no one else would do it, she dispatched a drilling rig to Americus, GA, to dig a water well for Clarence Jordan's Koinonia Farms. This visionary, inter-racial Christian community was boycotted and persecuted by many---but not by Mary. "They needed water and I could help," she told me. In addition to these storytellers, the panning camera catches a vibrant Julian Turner at the Gospel Piano; and nearby is a young Jonathan Schroeder holding his two year old daughter, little Maria Christina, in his arms. Maybe a few movies will be made this year as we turn 60 in September. Maybe a decade down the line, folk will look back and remember us as we were in 2012. By then, more of us will have crossed The River, like Fisher and Marjorie and Lois; and the rest of us will be waiting our turn. But regardless of which side of Jordan's stormy banks we will stand in 2022, you and I have shared a common journey, a common kinship. We were loved by God and Northside Drive Baptist Church; and that's good enough for me. |
