Praying the Psalms*
By Rev. James Lamkin
Psalm 74 -- "The Night also is Thine"
*(The congregation is invited to read A-Psalm-A-Day during 2012. Here is today's reflection and prayer based on a psalm from the past week.)
It is easy to be spiritual when things are going well. (That may be debatable, but let's go with it.) Prayers are filled with gratitude. There's money in the bank. Health is good. There's no stress at work. The roof doesn't leak. All the family gets along.
Yet, life rarely is that way. There's too much month left at the end of the money. The kids are sick. Ends don't meet. More medical tests are needed. Changes are coming down the food chain from the top of the organization. More meetings are needed to talk about the need for more meetings. Plus, the weight of the world's news overwhelms and depletes our desire to do good.
One day you wake-up realizing how sick and tired you are of being sick and tired.
Sometimes a haunting darkness descends. It may not be capital "D" Depression; it may be more routine, small "d" depression. It doesn't take you down, like the flu; but it lingers like an annoying cough and cold. Sometimes it feels like the mystic, St. John of the Cross, called it: The Dark Night of the Soul.
As I've marinated in the psalms over the last two years, I've learned that the psalmists have PhD's in the depth of the dark night. These authorities in darkness have "been there, done that." Plus, they lived to tell about it.
In my Bible, Psalm 74 is headlined: "Pleas for Help in Time of National Humiliation." In it the psalmist sings the familiar refrain of "why and how long?" The writer wants God to know how bad God looks in all of this...and how embarrassed all of God's people are.
However, like an airplane stuck in a downward spiral, at the last minute, the poet pulls-out. He reclaims his faithful confidence in God. In fact, he writes:
For thine is the day,
The night also is thine.
Herein is the rhythm of a maturing faith. How one feels today is important; but whether things are all sunny or as dark as pitch, God still is God. God's light is not extinguished by human darkness.
In fact, some of the most significant times of maturity and growth in my own life have been times when I've felt almost suffocated by my own darkness. Breath and sight and hope all took on bigger meanings through the sheer act of survival.
On this day, at dawn and dusk, when the light breaks and when the darkness begins, I will remember that both belong to God.

A Word About Bad Weather
and Church Services
As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel Church School or worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:
1) The ministers and the moderator will consult and then make the decision.
2) An email notice will be sent to all congregants for whom the church has email addresses.
3) The moderator will notify the deacon chair.
4) The deacons and other caregivers will attempt to phone congregants who do not have email or who might need special notification.
5) The minister will notify the local television stations. |
