Clothing for Cold Children

Edgewood Church is a new community-centered church started in Atlanta's Edgewood neighborhood---a racially, economically, and educationally diverse neighborhood.

One of the needs they have recently noticed in their community is for fall and winter clothing for children. Many children are still wearing shorts and t-shirts to school, even on the coldest days. To address this need, Edgewood Church is hoping to have clothing and toy store for families to come and buy what their children need at prices they can afford (crazy cheap prices). The proceeds will go to an organization that helps homeless women get back on their feet. This "store" will give parents a dignified way to provide for their children while also helping out others in need.

All children's clothing from infants to fifth grade will be greatly appreciated. They would love to have everything in by December 14 to give them enough time to organize the "store" on December 17.

Praying the Psalms*

By Rev. James Lamkin

Psalm 32 - "The Hiding Place"

*(The congregation is invited to read A-Psalm-A-Day during 2011. Here is today's reflection and prayer based on a psalm from the past week.)

In 1971 The Hiding Place found a place in the hearts of a newly emerging evangelical American readership. My heart was one of those.

The author, Corrie ten Boom, tells her story in its pages. Her Christian mother and father sympathized with the Jewish people living in Holland at the beginning of WWII. Because of this, the ten Booms were approached by the Dutch Underground to build a secret room in their house where Jews could hide from the Nazis. It is the Anne Frank story told from the other side of the wall.

Eventually, they were found-out by the Gestapo and were imprisoned. Corrie and her sister, Betsie, were sent to the women's concentration camp at Ravensbruck.

There, Betsie died. Corrie, too, was not far from Death's door; but miraculously she was freed due to clerical error.

After the war, her life was caught up in a new mission of grace and forgiveness. In her book, Tramp for the Lord, she tells of being put to the test as she came face-to-face with a Ravensbruck soldier at a Bible study in Germany in 1947. "For a long moment we grasped each other's hands, the former guard and the former prisoner. I had never known God's love so intensely as I did at that moment."

Eventually, Corrie ten Boom made her way to America. She was discovered by the Billy Graham Crusade team and her books gained a wider readership through Guideposts Press.

Her first book about the secret room gets its name from Psalm 32:7. The writer speaks of God, "You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble...."

As I read Psalm 32 this week, I thought back on my college years as my faith evolved awkwardly and abruptly. (Seems to me, that is way of all faith journeys.) Those were the days of the best-seller, The Late, Great Planet Earth, where Jesus was expected to come back at any minute, then rapture the church, then everybody else is Left Behind to fend for themselves during The Great Tribulation.

Though such speech was the coin-of-the-evangelical-realm in the 70's, Corrie ten Boom rejected this notion. Life had taught her that God's people are not immune to suffering. God does not remove us or rapture us from it; God stays with us in it.

The Hiding Place, both book and movie, found a place in my heart.

Prayer: All-loving God, You are our hiding place. As the fears of life surround and threaten, You hold us and hide us in Your heart.

We are not naïve. We know that life is dangerous. However, knowing that we are hidden in Your heart, helps us find stamina and courage. Amen.

Thank You!

On behalf of the Worship and Music Ministry Team, I would like to thank all who made the Hanging of the Greens Service happen. The Flower Team did a superb job as always. This is never easy coming on the heels of Thanksgiving. When you see a member, please thank them for all the work they do during this season.

Thanks to all who participated in the service, all who brought the delicious nibbles, and the staff for their support.

GIVING TREE

Morningstar Children and Family Services

For most people Christmas is a time filled with memories of family, bountiful meals and cherished gifts. Imagine the season for a child who is removed from family and for whom family may hold few positive memories.   Through the Giving Tree we can help the children in Morningstar's residential care feel the love and joy of the Christmas season.

Take a tag from the tree and return the UNWRAPPED gift to the church by December 11.

Young Adults & Families Christmas PartyZach Bay

  By Zach Bay

December 3, at 4 PM

At the Home of Louise & Bedford Davis

Come and celebrate Christmas, as we did last year, with Louise and Bedford Davis! They have graciously agreed to host the young adults at their home. Kids are invited also! Please bring with you a side dish (the main dish will be provided by Louise and will be a chicken rice dish) and a gift for a white elephant gift exchange.

A Christmas Mission Opportunity from Barbara Atchley:

Last Sunday there were @ 25 gift requests on the Giving Tree for our 5 children at Morningstar. The only ones that did not get taken were the high ticket items---ipods and Nintendo DSi. I know those are pretty pricey, but these teens are like the rest of us in wanting music/games.

Please consider bringing a small monetary offering to purchase one of these items. It would be a great gift and would mean a lot to a child who doesn't have much bright in his/her life.

Families at Northside Drive,

Do you want to use a smart phone app to journey through the Advent season with your kids? Try this one out for $2.99 through Abingdon Press.

Take a Journey with Your Family This Holiday Season

The Journey App Is Now Available for Android & iPhone!

Based on Adam Hamilton's The Journey series which takes a unique look at the story of the birth of Jesus, The Journey Advent Calendar smartphone app introduces a unique way for families to engage their children in the celebration leading up to Christmas. Just like a traditional Advent calendar, the app opens a new surprise each day. Use as a follow-up to The Journey church program or as stand-alone, Bible-based activities to share with the whole family. Initially, the app opens with seven unlocked activities, then beginning December 1, something new is unlocked each day: videos, connect-the-dots, coloring, jigsaw puzzles, flipcard games, greeting cards, and Bible quizzes. But unlike a traditional Advent calendar, this app goes with you wherever you go. And your kids' delight isn't limited to the first time they "open the window."The JourneyAdvent Calendar app is a great solution for parents interested in new ways to draw the family together in closer fellowship this Advent season. The only question is: who will love it more, you or your kids?

Christmas Poinsettias
The deadline for orders is December 11.

Our Annual Poinsettia Altar will be in place beginning Sunday, December 18, and remain through Sunday, Christmas Day. While altar flowers are always given to the Glory of God, it's our tradition at Northside Drive to give poinsettias each Christmas also in honor/memory/thankfulness for our friends and family. Each poinsettia plant is only $20, and order envelopes are available in the Narthex for your use (simply fill it out & drop it in the offering plate). Or call Rose Hidlay at 404-237-8621 with the number of poinsettias you wish to give, the memorial details, and mail your check to the church office.
Young Family Church School
Attention all new and young families!
Our Church School class has a new twist. We will gather together each Sunday from 9:30-10:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall for donuts, coffee, and a time to relax, grow, and talk with each other. Instead of a set curriculum, we will fellowship with food and friends.
We hope the children will all enjoy the nursery, preschool, and school age Church School classes together. If you have a baby not yet attending the nursery, feel free to bring your child to class.
We hope to see you all Sunday morning at 9:30 AM. The donuts will be waiting for you!
Church School

Adult Church School classes provide different learning opportunities for all ages of adults to strengthen their Christian pilgrimage. We offer a variety of classes, some age-oriented, some topic-oriented, with emphasis on Bible study, seminars and lively discussion. We encourage everyone to visit several different classes to find the right "fit" and to participate in any class offered that is of interest. Special seminars and classes are offered several times a year as well. There is a place for everyone to learn and grow in their relationship to God in Christ. Come join us!

Church School begins each Sunday at 9:30 AM.
