Praying the Psalms*

 By Rev. James Lamkin

Psalm 13: "How Much Farther?"

*(The congregation is invited to read A-Psalm-A-Day during 2011. Here is today's reflection and prayer based on a psalm from the past week.)

Every parent has heard it a thousand times. The family may have travelled many hours and logged-in many miles; and yet there are "miles to go before we sleep."

When nerves are about shot, from the back seat, a voice cries out, "How much longer?" At such times, longer, morphs into: Lawnnnnngerrrrrr? It is drawn-out about the time everyone is tired-out.

The answer never is a pretty one. Rarely does the parent get to say, "Why look! There's Uncle Paul and Dorcas waving from their driveway right now. We're here!"

Rather, the kid is answered with a growl, something like, "We are not in Mississippi yet."

God, too, is a parent. God, too, hears a lot of whining.

According to the Psalms, God is used to it. The question seems like it is in nearly every psalm. Take the 13th, for example:

How long, O Lord?

       Will you forget me forever?"

How long

will you hide your face from me?

How long

must I bear pain in my soul,

And have sorrow in my heart all day long?

How long

shall my enemy be exalted over me?

I suspect that most of the Psalms were written during the Babylonian Exile. Maybe they had been around for a while, perhaps sung around campfires or during worship services. However, during the Exile, their songs and stories were about all that they had left. They wrote-down what rose-up in their hearts.

What was in their hearts was a whole bunch of lament. Thus, they sang, "How long, how long, O Lord?"

Perhaps it was in this release that relief came. Perhaps they answered their own prayer:

"But I trusted in your steadfast love;

my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord,

because the Lord has dealt bountifully with me."

Bountifully. Now there's a Thanksgiving word.

Christmas Giving at Northside Drive
Although the Halloween costumes have just been returned to the attic and Mr. and Mrs. Pilgrim are now sitting on the dining room table, it is time to prepare our Christmas mission projects. As in the past few years, we will have the opportunity to provide gifts to both children and adults through several organizations-Buckhead Christian Ministries (Joyous Toys); Morningstar Children and Family Services (Giving Tree-new toys and clothing), and The Extension (toiletries and new clothing for men and women in a transitional program) The Winter Mission Offering for 2011 will benefit Morningstar Children and Family Services which provides residential and foster care for special needs children who have suffered neglect and abuse. More details about the giving opportunities are available in the Northside Notes and in flyers available in the Narthex.

Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church

November 17-19, 2011

History

The New Baptist Covenant is an informal alliance of more than 30 racially, geographically, and theologically diverse Baptist organizations from throughout North America. Representatives of these Baptist organizations have reaffirmed traditional Baptist values, including sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and its implications for public and private morality, as well as their obligations as Christians to fulfill the biblical mandate to promote peace with justice, to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, care for the sick and the marginalized, and promote religious liberty and respect for religious diversity.

In early 2008 more than 20,000 Baptists from across North America gathered in Atlanta in an unprecedented demonstration of Baptist unity. The history-making event culminated months of planning by leaders of more than 30 Baptist organizations.

Under the theme "Unity in Christ," the three-day Atlanta Celebration featured speakers and presenters who addressed historic Baptist commitments and explored other opportunities to work together as Christian partners. The Biblical text for the Celebration was Luke 4:18-19-----"bring good news to the poor, proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

November 2011

Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church will serve as New Baptist Covenant II's anchor site this Thursday and Friday, hosting worship services and breakout sessions that will be broadcast via satellite to various host cities across the nation. Hanging of the Green Service

Sunday, November 27, 2011

The Worship and Music Ministry Team invite you to our annual Hanging of the Green Service Sunday, November 27, 2011. This is always a special service marking the beginning of the Advent Season. The service will take place at 9:30 AM in lieu of Church School, and will be preceded by a time of fellowship and refreshments in the Narthex. During the service we will reflect on some of the Christian components of the season, and special music will be shared as we decorate the Sanctuary. Plan to bring greens from your garden (holly, magnolia, evergreens, etc.) to help adorn our sacred space.

Paul's Music Notes
Paul
On Sunday morning, December 11, our music ministry will present a program of Advent Lessons and Carols, featuring the Sanctuary Choir, the Northside Drive Ringers, and the Children's Choir. The morning worship hour will consist of familiar readings from scripture, interspersed with beautiful music of the Advent season. You are cordially invited to join us for this special celebration of the season at NDBC.

Church School

Adult Church School classes provide different learning opportunities for all ages of adults to strengthen their Christian pilgrimage. We offer a variety of classes, some age-oriented, some topic-oriented, with emphasis on Bible study, seminars and lively discussion. We encourage everyone to visit several different classes to find the right "fit" and to participate in any class offered that is of interest. Special seminars and classes are offered several times a year as well. There is a place for everyone to learn and grow in their relationship to God in Christ. Come join us!

Church School begins each Sunday at 9:30 AM.

Christmas Poinsettias
Our Annual Poinsettia Altar will be in place beginning Sunday, December 18, and remain through Sunday, Christmas Day. While altar flowers are always given to the Glory of God, it's our tradition at Northside Drive to give poinsettias each Christmas also in honor/memory/thankfulness for our friends and family. Each poinsettia plant is only $20, and order envelopes are available in the Narthex for your use (simply fill it out & drop it in the offering plate). Or call Rose Hidlay at 404-237-8621 with the number of poinsettias you wish to give, the memorial details, and mail your check to the church office. The deadline for orders is December 11.
Young Family Church School
Attention all new and young families!
Our Church School class has a new twist. We will gather together each Sunday from 9:30-10:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall for donuts, coffee, and a time to relax, grow, and talk with each other. Instead of a set curriculum, we will fellowship with food and friends.
We hope the children will all enjoy the nursery, preschool, and school age Church School classes together. If you have a baby not yet attending the nursery, feel free to bring your child to class.
We hope to see you all Sunday morning at 9:30 AM. The donuts will be waiting for you!
