Pastoral Reflections JandS2010

By James Lamkin

"Gratitude and Giving:

A Duet of Grace"

I think it was our beloved former trustee, John McIntyre, who said it so eloquently, "The Bible says, 'God loves a cheerful giver'; but we'll take money from a grouch!"

John had a way with words.

This time of year, we travel on the dual tracks of giving and gratitude. We don't have to look far to see how they are connected. 'Tis the season to recollect; but upon doing so, we collect. Spirituality is motivated by some guilt...but also (I hope) by a lot of gratitude.

Near the holidays, I often reprint my Thanksgiving article about our own, George Smith. (It ranks up there with my Jesus and Waffle House piece.)

George was a natural businessman. He could go for the bottom-line of a budget's spreadsheet as strategically as an Acapulco cliff-diver.

Annually, I've told about George's rather gloomy disposition. It seemed oddly juxtaposed to his more-than-generous giving.

Yet, each Thanksgiving Day a metamorphosis occurred. He seemed to shed his sad eyes; and a glad smile found its way from ear-to-ear. The hidden source of his generosity and giving became visible. George's heart was full of gratitude.

His favorite song was Count Your Many Blessings. It is a good 'un. It always makes me cry. It speaks of being "tempest tossed" and hollow-gut discouragement when "all is lost."

But the song has a simple prescription to counter-act the poison of a morose diagnosis: count your blessings, name them one-by-one, and be surprised at how busy the unseen God has been working all things together for good.

Sometimes, George was a cheerful giver. Often times, he was a grouchy giver.

Come to think of it, cheerful givers may be overrated, and probably high-maintenance. I'd rather have a committed giver any day.

George has long crossed the Jordan; but I still look for him on occasion. I could see him last Sunday, on All Saints, sitting in the balcony, along with all the company of heaven who forever proclaim the glory of God's name. I could hear him saying, "Tell 'em preacher! Tell 'em it takes money to run the church. Tell 'em to give and to commit themselves to be givers."

"I'll tell them," I said; and I did.

On All Saints Sunday we were fed at Jesus' Table. We left filled with gratitude and ready to give. 'Tis the diet of a faithful and graceful duet.

Young Family Church School
Attention all new and young families!
Our Church School class has a new twist. We will gather together each Sunday from 9:30-10:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall for donuts, coffee, and a time to relax, grow, and talk with each other. Instead of a set curriculum, we will fellowship with food and friends.
We hope the children will all enjoy the nursery, preschool, and school age Church School classes together. If you have a baby not yet attending the nursery, feel free to bring your child to class.
We hope to see you all Sunday morning at 9:30 AM. The donuts will be waiting for you!

Hanging of the Green Service

Sunday, November 27, 2011

The Worship and Music Ministry Team invite you to our annual Hanging of the Green Service Sunday, November 27, 2011. This is always a special service marking the beginning of the Advent Season. The service will take place at 9:30 AM in lieu of Church School, and will be preceded by a time of fellowship and refreshments in the Narthex. During the service we will reflect on some of the Christian components of the season, and special music will be shared as we decorate the Sanctuary. Plan to bring greens from your garden (holly, magnolia, evergreens, etc.) to help adorn our sacred space.

Paul's Music Notes
Paul
On Sunday morning, December 11, our music ministry will present a program of Advent Lessons and Carols, featuring the Sanctuary Choir, the Northside Drive Ringers, and the Children's Choir. The morning worship hour will consist of familiar readings from scripture, interspersed with beautiful music of the Advent season. You are cordially invited to join us for this special celebration of the season at NDBC.

Special seminars and classes are offered several times a year as well. There is a place for everyone to learn and grow in their relationship to God in Christ. Come join us!
