Praying the Psalms*
By Rev. James Lamkin
Psalm 6: "Tears"
*(The congregation is invited to read A-Psalm-A-Day during 2011. Here is today's reflection and prayer by the pastor based on a psalm from the past week.)
I am surprised how often tears are mentioned in the Bible; but I shouldn't be. A pastor's beat leads through the alleyways and dead end streets of life where tears make their homes. To be invited to walk through the pain places where tears come from is a humbling and holy vocation.
I often say that tears are prayers that have not yet found words. Every drop concentrates "the hopes and fears of all the years," then lands in the lap of God. What a weeping prayer prays is more than what is known, and certainly more than what can be said.
The writer of Psalm 6 says, "I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with weeping. My eyes waste away because of grief...."
Nighttime, especially, is vulnerable to tearful places within the human heart. The workday distractions have stopped. The commute is over. The façade is off. The cell phone, silent. Then all the haunting worries of the day descend like an opportunistic infection. "Every night I flood my bed with tears," said the Psalmist.
Even the last book of the Bible, The Revelation, does not close without addressing our weeping. The penultimate chapter gives a glimpse of the intimate grace of God's own hand...like a mother wiping aside the tears of her child. God will wipe away our tears.
Prayer: All loving God, 'tis a good thing that you weary not of our weeping. There are more tears to be cried. Hear both our dreads and our delights in their drops. Listen to their longings which are deeper than our thoughts, but never deeper than your love. Amen.

For much of the last 25 years, the Festival Singers have presented a benefit concert during the fall season to support the work of a humanitarian organization. Past beneficiaries have included Hosea Williams Feed the Hungry, AIDAtlanta, Genesis Shelter, March of Dimes of Georgia, and many others. So please come on November 11, to hear some beautiful music to and support a worthy cause! |
Fatal Embrace
You are invited to join the Roger Williams Class on November 13, at 9:45 AM to hear Mark Braverman discuss his book 'Fatal Embrace'. The book charts Braverman's journey as an American Jew struggling with the difficult realities of Israel's policies toward non-Jews since its founding in 1948. Judaism embraced Zionism's call for separation from Gentiles into a Jewish-only state, while Christianity embraced post-Holocaust theology's call to rid itself of anti-Semitism. The two have combined to suppress the conversations needed to bring about peace in the Holy Land. |
