Praying the Psalms*
By Rev. James Lamkin
Psalm 131: "Calm and Quiet"
*(The congregation is invited to read A-Psalm-A-Day during 2011. Here is today's reflection and prayer by the pastor based on a psalm from the past week.)
I believe maturity means being responsible for one's own spiritual and emotional health. I also believe no one does that more than 70% of the time.
Actions often follow our rising anxiety. We blame others, gossip, feel like a victim, and try to manipulate others into managing our anxiety for us. 'Tis the way of all of us to do all of the above more than we admit.
The psalmists did the same. They lived on the same planet, with the same longings and laments as do we; but here's the punchline, they also prayed them.
They passed along the weight of their universe back to the creator of the universe. They knew better than to bear the weight of the world on their shoulders, in their gut, and through the timeless hours of a sleepless night.
They knew to give their worries to God.
Here's how the 131st Psalm put it
(translated by Eugene Peterson):
God, I'm not trying to rule the roost,
I don't want to be king of the mountain.
I haven't meddled where I have no business
or fantasized grandiose plans.
I have kept my feet on the ground,
I've cultivated a quiet heart.
Like a baby content in its mother's arms,
My soul is a baby content.
Each week in our church's yoga class, I try to pray and do what this psalmist prayed and did. I try to own my limits (a 3x6 yoga mat) and focus on what I can (a quieted self). My teacher, Amanda Gregg, invites us to "have an intention" for each session. She says to put the day's worries in a basket on the way to the mat and not bother with them for the hour. She says our breath knows things and wants to help us push-out our poisonous stress and pull-in our spiritual resources. She says our bodies hold our worries in their muscles and ligaments. Maybe our bodies are trying to befriend us-for the short run; but in the long run, knots form, injures occur, and spasms happen.
This is our wiring. It also may explain why we never live above the 70th percentile when it comes to stress-level management.
So each Wednesday, I give a gift to me...and to the church...and to my family and to God. I go to the mat each Wednesday at 6 PM. I make the 131st psalmist's hope, my hope: to be calm and quiet... sitting like a little kid in the lap of God. Amanda calls it child's pose.
Prayer: All-loving God, as Thy servant, Augustine, put it, "Our souls are restless until we find our rest in thee." And our bodies too. Amen.

Mark Your Calendars!
The New Baptist Covenant will gather together Thursday-Saturday, November 17-19. What began four years ago with a small group of committed Baptist leaders is accelerating into a thriving grassroots movement striving to live by Jesus' Luke 4 mandate to "bring good news to the poor, proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." The New Baptist Covenant is committed to supporting local efforts to build lasting relationships that cross racial, economic and theological lines while we seek to live into the words of Luke 4:18-19. This fall the movement will use some of the latest technology to bring NBC II to multiple cities. Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Atlanta, will serve as NBC II's anchor site, hosting worship services and breakout sessions that will be broadcast via satellite to various host cities across the nation. Host cities will provide additional programming and coordinate a day of local mission opportunities on Saturday, November 19. For more information visit http://newbaptistcovenant.org/. |
