Praying the Psalms*
By Rev. James Lamkin
Psalm 126 - "Bringing in the Sheaves"
*(The congregation is invited to read A-Psalm-A-Day during 2011. Here is today's reflection and prayer by the pastor based on a psalm from the past week.)
Hymnody's home is The Psalms.
A few years ago in my Pastor's Wednesday Bible Study, we studied The Book of Revelation. In it we found at least 400 Hebrew Bible references; and many of those come from psalms. 'Tis obviously a rich tradition. Poets pull from these rich images of praise, allusion, lament, and longing.
A character named Knowles Shaw wrote a gospel hymn in 1874 based on Psalm 126. He came from the Church of Christ tradition only sang a cappella.
Some of us grew-up singing this hymn: Bringing in the Sheaves. Some of us were singing it before we knew the words. Some of us sang Bringing in the Sheets; and others wondered why we should be Bringing in the Sheep? And just what are sheaves anyway?
It is an agrarian image. A sheaf is a bundle of grain. During harvest, laborers cut the grain, gathered it in clumps, and bundled it together. Then, the bundles were brought in...as in "bringing in the sheaves."
The psalmist of 126 had a holy imagination. Dreaming while still in Babylon, or perhaps eager while awaiting the post-exile crops to grow, the psalmist prayed his hopeful imagination. He asked God for restoration. He pictured the time when laughter would return to the land and joy would evoke shouting. Buckets of tears had been shed; and the writer pictured them as seeds sown.
I've often said that tears are prayers that have not yet found words. If so, then we've all prayed bushels of prayers. We've saturated the ground; and the ground is holy with hope.
"Imagine," says the psalmist, "the day will come when the ripe earth will make abundant crops." The weepers will transform into reapers. Despair will morph into gladness; and we shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves.
Prayer: All loving God, I know of tears. They come at the most unexpected times. Often they are attached to memories, broken memories, memories that are not yet healed and are not yet easy to hold. Take these tears, O God, and plant them in your good land of life and love. Let me live long enough to watch hope grow and thrive; and in your mercy allow me the joy of participating in the harvest. Amen

The Worship & Music Ministry Team |
Mark Your Calendars!
The New Baptist Covenant will gather together Thursday-Saturday, November 17-19. What began four years ago with a small group of committed Baptist leaders is accelerating into a thriving grassroots movement striving to live by Jesus' Luke 4 mandate to "bring good news to the poor, proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." This fall the movement will use some of the latest technology to bring NBC II to multiple cities. Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Atlanta, will serve as NBC II's anchor site, hosting worship services and breakout sessions that will be broadcast via satellite to various host cities across the nation. Host cities will provide additional programming and coordinate a day of local missions opportunities on Saturday, November 19. For more information, visit http://newbaptistcovenant.org/. |
