Praying the Psalms*
By Rev. James Lamkin
Psalm 115 "Mindful"
*(The congregation is invited to read A-Psalm-A-Day during 2011. Here is today's reflection and prayer by the pastor based on a psalm from the past week.)
Mindfulness is a big deal these days. Have you noticed? Mindfulness is attentiveness. It is an awareness of one's surroundings and how your own sense of self interacts in relationship to those surroundings.
Even in Liz's military training and info...they are emphasizing mindfulness. I suppose its first cousin would be situational awareness.
Mindful would be the opposite of scatterbrained. To concentrate without obsessing, to focus without staring, and to be alert without being anxious are all attributes of mindfulness.
Psalm 115:12 says, "The Lord has been mindfulof us...and will bless us...."
This makes me think of the line from Psalm 8. The psalmist muses about the grandeur of the heavens, then pauses, then juxtaposes human smallness with the heavens' immensity. Next, there's the question: "What are human beings that you are mindful of them?" It is a puzzlement! If God's day job is to run the heavens, then why would God want to take time piddling with humans?
Yet, the psalmists took comfort believing that during their times of exile and displacement, while living in the land of forgotten memories, God had not forgotten them. In fact, even with all that God had to do in minding the heavens, God also was constantly mindful of them.
When we say to a friend, "You are on my mind," we are saying that we care. Well, according to the psalmists, God cares.
Prayer: "God, sometimes it seems that no one cares. There are times when we don't care. And there are times when it seems that You don't care. The world looks like it's gone to hell-in-a-hand-basket; and You are far away.
But we know better. In fact, on our better days, we believe that the psalmist was right: As amazing as it may be, You are mindful of us. And to be in the heart and mind of God...well...we can't do any better than that. Amen."
A-Psalm-A-Day Upcoming Schedule:
September 28-Psalm 121
September 29-Psalm 122
September 30-Psalm 123
October 1-Psalm 124
October 2-Psalm 125

Organ Restoration
Dear Northside Drive Friends:
The beginning of August you received a letter regarding the much needed repairs to our beloved organ. She is nearly 40 years old now, and time has taken its toll on her as with any instrument, car, house or other capital item her age.
The funding needs of the project are:
TOTAL NEEDED $200,000
Funds from Humphries Endowment $37,000
Funds from Memorial Gifts $13,000
Amount to be raised from Congregation $150,000
Lead Gift from member $25,000
To date pledged from congregation $89,453
Remaining amount to be raised $35,547
We unanimously voted for the new Hymnal. Let us be unanimous in participation of this pledging campaign for the restoration of our Schantz organ. We have been blessed with one of the finest organs in Atlanta. It is our responsibility to make sure that the youngsters in our congregation are able to enjoy it for many years to come.
If you have already pledged, please consider an additional amount. If you have not pledged, please call the church office and give Rose, our business manager your pledge. In addition you may drop by the church with your completed pledge card or pledge online at www.northsidedrive.org. You will have until the end of 2012 to fulfill your pledge, but once we have the total amount pledged the work will begin.
If you have any questions regarding this project, please contact any member of the committee. Thank you for your generous support of the much needed repairs to our organ.
Sincerely,
The Organ Restoration Committee

Shawls ... made for centuries universal and embracing,
symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving, God.
They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace,
mother, hug, shelter and beautify.
Those who have received these shawls have been
uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to
fly above their troubles...

Mark Your Calendars!
The New Baptist Covenant will gather together Thursday-Saturday, November 17-19. What began four years ago with a small group of committed Baptist leaders is accelerating into a thriving grassroots movement striving to live by Jesus' Luke 4 mandate to "bring good news to the poor, proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." This fall the movement will use some of the latest technology to bring NBC II to multiple cities. Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Atlanta, will serve as NBC II's anchor site, hosting worship services and breakout sessions that will be broadcast via satellite to various host cities across the nation. Host cities will provide additional programming and coordinate a day of local missions opportunities on Saturday, November 19. For more information, visit http://newbaptistcovenant.org/. |
