Pastoral Reflections
By James E. Lamkin
Jeremiah: Weeping and Wondering about God
Each spring and fall I lead a Wednesday Bible Study. I find that it keeps me growing and "in the Word," as we used to say.
All this Bible study is changing my prayers. They are more earthy now. They are more like the ranting prophets and the weary psalmists. They questioned, begged, demanded, fussed, complained, praised, petitioned, sulked, thanked, wept, wailed, and wondered.
Also, when worshiping God, one psalmist told the people to applaud and shout for joy (47:1); another lifted his hands in praise (63:4). (Though we of NDBC claim to be biblical, we haven't yet figured-out where to put the shouting, the clapping, and the hand-lifting in our worship services. It may take awhile.)
Jeremiah is a guy I like. He runs the whole spectrum of emotions and would say that he was more drafted than called into God's service. At times he loved his vocation as prophet; other times he loathed it. Once, he said he wish he had never been born. He is known as "the weeping prophet" and he wondered a lot about God.
Jeremiah gives us a behind-the-scenes-look at how the Bible evolved. He writes some, then some more, then adds even more.
Jeremiah also tells us a lot about God. It seems that God is more interested in maturity than tranquility. Relationship is serious business. Through relationships, we grow. And if God's people aren't going to keep their end of the bargain, so be it. Worship down at the Temple may have looked good, even decent and in order; yet the atrocious ethics of the people let some go hungry while others got rich. Plus, the people flirted with the pagan gods of the prosperity gospel.
Eventually, God had had enough! Like dominoes, the Hebrew's religion, society, and capital fell. Many were deported hundreds of miles away.
Turns out that God was secure enough to not need God's people to make God look good! And, turns out, God forgives.
Over the next several weeks I will be doing a Jeremiah Bible study on Wednesday morning at 10:30, mostly meeting in Fellowship Hall. Also, I will be offering the same Bible study on Wednesday nights at 7 PM, when we are not doing This I Believe or meeting as the Church-in-conference. My hunch is: the mornings will be more didactic; and the evenings will be more dialogical.
Here are the weekly topics:
Jeremiah 1:1-19
"God's (Collect) Call"
Jeremiah 36-39
"Welcome to My World"
Jeremiah 3:1-25
"Great is Their UN-faithfulness"
Jeremiah 8:18-9:3
"There is NO Balm in Gilead"
Jeremiah 11:18-20:18
"Tell It All Brother!"
Jeremiah 13:1-11; 19; 32
"Sign Language"
Jeremiah 29:1-23
"A Letter from Home to the Homesick"
Jeremiah 30-31
"Is There Any Consolation?"

Organ Restoration
Dear Northside Drive Friends:
The beginning of August you received a letter regarding the much needed repairs to our beloved organ. She is nearly 40 years old now, and time has taken its toll on her as with any instrument, car, house or other capital item her age.
The funding needs of the project are:
TOTAL NEEDED $200,000
Funds from Humphries Endowment $37,000
Funds from Memorial Gifts $13,000
Amount to be raised from Congregation $150,000
Lead Gift from member $25,000
To date pledged from congregation $89,453
Remaining amount to be raised $35,547
We unanimously voted for the new Hymnal. Let us be unanimous in participation of this pledging campaign for the restoration of our Schantz organ. We have been blessed with one of the finest organs in Atlanta. It is our responsibility to make sure that the youngsters in our congregation are able to enjoy it for many years to come.
If you have already pledged, please consider an additional amount. If you have not pledged, please call the church office and give Rose, our business manager your pledge. In addition you may drop by the church with your completed pledge card or pledge online at www.northsidedrive.org. You will have until the end of 2012 to fulfill your pledge, but once we have the total amount pledged the work will begin.
If you have any questions regarding this project, please contact any member of the committee. Thank you for your generous support of the much needed repairs to our organ.
Sincerely,
The Organ Restoration Committee

Shawls ... made for centuries universal and embracing,
symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving, God.
They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace,
mother, hug, shelter and beautify.
Those who have received these shawls have been
uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to
fly above their troubles...
~ Written in 1998 by: Janet Bristow
Come join us on Wednesday, October 19, at 7 PM, in the church Parlor to knit or crochet a prayer shawl. If you are not sure how, no problem, there will be plenty of people to help you get started. Missions Opportunity

Buckhead Christian Ministries
Volunteer Opportunity
Jesus sent his disciples out into the world to spread the kingdom of God. The people here at NDBC have been following that example for 59 years through the missions of the church. One such mission Northside has chosen to work with is Buckhead Christian Ministries.
They explain on their website, http://buckheadchristianministry.org/, They are a faith based organization that provides emergency assistance to individuals and families of all backgrounds and faiths, treating everyone with dignity and compassion. They help with more than a handout but with a hand up! In order for them to provide these services they offer a dual mission of a great place to volunteer as our own Jane Fitzgerald can testify.
Jane has, for several years, given of her time to BCM's food pantry. She has stocked shelves and bagged groceries for those who come in for assistance. Upon hearing of her volunteerism, I was inspired and joined myself. I chose to be at the thrift store, http://buckheadchristianministry.org/thriftique.html, where there are great buys for all. Of course, Jane said she was not the first Northside Driver to be at BCM; Aline Cofield had led the way.
When Jesus sent out his disciples he told them if they met opposition to knock off the dirt and move on. When you volunteer at BCM you will not find any kind of opposition, only a great experience. So if you are looking for a place to volunteer, take a look at BCM and see if something excites you! |
