Praying the Psalms*

Psalm 74 "...Thine also the Night."
*(The congregation is invited to read A-Psalm-A-Day during 2011. Here is today's reflection and prayer by the pastor based on a psalm from the past week.)
Reading the Psalms is like walking down memory lane. The lyrics of hymns, Bible memory verses from long ago, and soaring poetry accompany me like old friends on a familiar path.
Last week, it happened again.
Though not as poetic as I remembered, the verse still moved me. Psalm 74:16a declares: "Yours is the day, yours also the night...."
Those words became my words more than a quarter century ago. I discovered them during my divorce. "The day" had turned into a protracted night.
Eventually, on the far side of that dark night, I found a new beginning and a new life. However, there were plenty of nights when I doubted that the light would ever return again. I feared a never-ending nadir.
That's when I came across this verse. It is a literal reference to the luminaries which dance in the sky: the sun by day and the moon by night Yet, I bet the psalmist wrote this with a wink. There's the dark of night; and then there is the dark night of the soul. The psalmist's wink means that he knew that God was in both, the physical and spiritual.
Yes, God created this ole' wobbling planet along with the heavens among which we spin; but, God also created us wobbling humans. Thine is the light, thine also the night.
It often is easy to celebrate God's daylight at the marriage altar, the baptismal waters, the beautiful sunset, and the birthing room where all goes well. "Thine is the day!"
However, life is not always spent in places where all goes well. There also is the ICU waiting room, the funeral home, the graveside, the rehab center, the prison cell, and the divorce court. In those places, when it may seem that God has been eclipsed, it can be hard to believe the psalmist's poetic hope: "Thine also the night."
Yet, many a biblical verse rises to say, "there is no place where God is not, regardless of how absent God feels." The solstice of suffering can become a crucible of grace even in the dark of night.
I have found it to be so.
"All loving God, forgive our railings against the nights of life. Hear them as prayers for understanding. Amid our hurts and sobbing, give us healing and sustenance. And when we feel lost in the dark, remind us, that the night, too, belongs to you. Amen."

The Andrew P. Stewart Center
Needs After-School Tutors through September 19.
School's back in session and The Andrew P. Stewart Center's after-school tutoring program has begun! The Mission Year volunteer missionaries who will be doing the majority of the tutoring, however, do not arrive until September 19. This leaves the Center understaffed for 4 weeks. The Executive Director, Clayton Davis, and Program Director, Megan Warley, have asked the members of the Board for help in finding tutors to bridge this gap.
It would be great if NDBC could be able to offer hands-on support for the important work of The Stewart Center, as well as our financial support. I know that giving of our time can sometimes be more difficult than writing a check, but I also know that personal participation reaps huge personal rewards, one being that your heart will swell from the experience. The tutoring program is Monday through Friday, begins at 2:30 PM and concludes at 6 PM. ENGAGE. ENRICH. ENJOY. 
TRIPLE E will meet on the second Tuesday of each month, September through May, from 11 am to 1 pm in the Fellowship Hall of Northside Drive Baptist Church, for lunch and to hear dynamic speakers on topics of general interest. It is designed to ENGAGE and inform participants in areas of history, art and architecture, travel and missions, to ENRICH the understanding and awareness of folks who come to learn together, and to encourage men and women of all ages to develop and ENJOY friendships across generations, both new and old. TRIPLE E is a great opportunity to invite friends from the community as well as within the congregation. We have a wonderful meeting place for diverse ideas, broad interests, and friendly, warm hospitality. We would love to share it with you!

Callaway Cup
The Callaway Cup golf tournament is scheduled for September 11! The after-church outing is for MEMBERS (and Regular Visitors), MEN and WOMEN, YOUNG and OLD. This is early notice to SAVE THE DATE (9-11-11). The highly coveted Callaway Cup was named in honor of Raymund Callaway, a long-time member of NDBC.

Missions Opportunity
2011 Interfaith Habitat for Humanity Build
Volunteers from our congregation will be needed for the 2011 Interfaith Partnership Habitat for Humanity build. Partnership congregations include Ahavath Achim Synagogue, All Saints CCU, Congregation B'nai Torah, Greater Springfield Baptist Church, St. Anne's Episcopal and Trinity Presbyterian.
Northside Drive will provide workers for four Saturdays beginning September 24. Our specific workdays have not been scheduled. The dedication will be held the first weekend of November.
More information about the build will be available in the coming weeks. Sign-up will begin on Sunday, August 28, following the worship service. Please consider participating in this very important mission work.

Northside Driver, Ruth Kramedjian has a selection of her handmade books on exhibit at the Smyrna Public Library during the months of July and August. The handmade books are exhibited in the glass cases on the second floor. Most of these books have been made in 2010 and 2011. Mike Gregg and Zach Bay will introduce the series with a session entitled Ways of Encountering the Divine and close the series with Religion and the Future of Humanity. Several adult leaders will facilitate the other 10 sessions, which will include Islam, Shi'tes/Sunni, the Koran, Roman Catholicism, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, Church of Scientology, and Christian Fundamentalism.

Worship this Summer

The NDBC Chapel

"There shall be seasons refreshing...." This is a line from There Shall Be Showers of Blessing, a Gospel song based on Ezekiel 34:26 and found in the chapel's Baptist Hymnal. Worship this summer will be as the hymn alludes: a season which is refreshing. And the season's refreshment will come through the intimacy of the chapel's sacred space, through the vitality of sacred music and congregational singing, and through stories of how God is at work renewing our lives.
The summer's sermon series will be: "The Neg-Lectionary." Like most mainline churches, we use the Revised Common Lectionary as the engine that drives weekly worship. For each Sunday and holy season there is a Gospel, Epistle, Psalms, and OldTestament text appropriately selected. However, even with all those Bible verses, there are still many scriptures which are neglected. Thus, "The Neg-Lectionary." The summer's scripture sampler includes: a sermon-sleeper who fell out of a window and died, a man who was lectured by his talking donkey, and a preacher who lost his voice (to the delight of many, I'm sure). 'Twill be an angular and refreshing approach to some overlooked scriptures. |
