Praying the Psalms*
By Rev. James Lamkin
Psalm 150
*(The congregation is invited to read A-Psalm-A-Day during 2011. Here is today's reflection and prayer by the pastor based on a psalm from the past week.)
Done.
One reading
of the Psalter, done.
Like thru-hikers on
the Appalachian Trail,
we've lived one day at a time,
one foot in front of the other,
and followed the pilgrim's path
to its destination.
Daily, we opened our Bibles
and read a psalm---
one psalm a day,
for 150 days.
It has been medicine...
a prescription for soul.
Daily, the poetry has tended us
like a shepherd,
challenged us like a prophet,
healed us like a good cry,
loved us with steadfast embrace,
and voiced for us our
Demands,
Anger,
Praise,
Prayers,
Laments,
Longings,
And
Gratitude,
to
God.
Done!
Yet, begun.
after the last line
of the last psalm,
"Let everything that breathes
Praise the Lord!"
We breathe
and begin again with Psalm 1,
"Blessed is...."
And then we pray
as we do today,
"All loving God,
Marinate us in the meaning
Of the psalmists' sacred poetry.
From the highest heaven,
to the lowest hell,
and all points in-between,
May some of our breaths
this day
be heard as prayers of praise.
Amen."
